Planning Their Church Wedding Got Emotional For Sonia Chew; Plus, A Few Logistical Issues They Didn't Expect
987 DJ Sonia Chew shares why her church wedding venue holds deep meaning, plus unexpected challenges hosting 300 guests.
In the latest episode of Countdown To “I Do”, 987 DJ Sonia Chew, 34, and her fiancé Jeremy Sng, 48, continue to document their wedding journey, now just a couple of months away, as they discuss venues, hosts, and, their church wedding.
Sonia and Jeremy will exchange their vows at the Church of St. Bernadette, as her family is Catholic, and the special place has extra meaning as it was the same location where her parents tied the knot too.
“I think — you’ll have to clarify this with my mum — one of the reasons they got married here is because my mum’s middle name is Bernadette,” quipped Sonia.
During their visit, the couple also learned about logistical details they might have otherwise overlooked, such as parking arrangements, wet-weather contingency plans, and the need to install large fans.
They also faced the challenge of fitting around 300 guests into the church for a ceremony that will last about an hour. On the bright side, Sonia added that, since it is a church, “the decor is half done already".
“The moment we stepped in and I saw the aisle, and where we’ll be walking, I was actually slightly emotional for one reason. The aisle is a good distance, because my dad can’t really walk so far, so I think this is perfect. It was in that moment that I did feel a little bit emotional. I’m very grateful that he is around to be witnessing this,” she said.
In 2023, Sonia revealed that her father had been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in his lung and had begun treatment.
For the actual day plans, the couple chose to work with companies Sonia already has a personal connection with or feels strongly about.
Bringing up her radio partner and close pal, Sonia then joked with a laugh: “On that day itself, Joakim [Gomez] is the host, Joakim is the ang pow collector, Joakim is the lector doing the reading — and also the driver, okay?”
After the site recce, the couple moved on to discussing other parts of their wedding, including a wedding cake, which Jeremy had assumed would be a fake display cake just used for cutting. “Who eats the cake?” he asked.
He added, “I mean I don’t really eat cakes, but if I have to…”
“...it would be a pandan cake,” Sonia interjected.
She went on to declare: “Okay guys, our wedding cake is a pandan cake. The one with the hole in the middle.”
If they really go with the pandan cake idea, that would honestly be pretty cool, if you ask us.
