Someone Put A Snack Cart For Delivery Drivers At HDB Lift Lobby; Sparks Unexpectedly Cynical Reactions From S’poreans

If you’re often on social media, you’ve probably seen clips of people setting up snack carts with drinks and on-the-go snacks for delivery drivers and riders, though most of these videos tend to come from overseas creators. 

Of late, a netizen spotted a similar snack shelf at what appears to be an HDB lift lobby in Singapore. Sharing a photo on Reddit, the OP praised the thoughtful gesture behind the neat setup, which consisted of Oreos, chocolates, candy, and other snacks. 

A handwritten sign read: “Dear delivery drivers, thank you! Please enjoy some snacks and drinks for the road. You are very much appreciated!”

While it is an unarguably sweet idea, with one commenter calling it “wholesome” and saying it is “nice to see such initiatives in Singapore”, others took a more practical and somewhat cynical view of the whole affair. 

Many argued that the snacks would be gone in no time —  not by the intended recipients, the delivery riders — but by peckish passersby.

“It’ll be ransacked by your boomers by tomorrow's end of day,” stated one netizen, while another echoed: “While nice, many people will come and take. Who are NOT delivery drivers.”

Some guessed that “selfish” members of the public might take all the snacks at once and load them into their trolley, with one declaring: “This is Singapore. I won’t be surprised if over 80 per cent of it [gets] taken by some boomer uncle or auntie.”

One netizen even suggested installing a camera at the setup to “see what kind of people take” the snacks. 

Perhaps the overall jaded tone of the comments section could be easily summed up by one comment: “Their generosity will soon be replaced with jaded disappointment when witnessing ugly public response.”

Way to put a damper on something that was meant to be generous and wholesome. Have we really become a little too cynical for our own good, and is it true that Singaporeans really don’t deserve nice things?
