Sheila Sim’s Husband Took A 9 Month Sabbatical To Spend More Time With Her And Their Then-Newborn Daughter; She Says She Really Appreciates How He's Always There For Her

Following her appearance on Jean Danker's podcast R U Okay?,where she shared more about her parenting wins and worries, Sheila spoke to 8days.sg about how it was the “simple pleasures” in life that she enjoyed the most during her husband’s break from work.

Parenting’s never easy, and Sheila Sim totally knows it.

The actress and soon-to-be mother-of-two has always been real about the ups and downs of her parenting journey on her Instagram, and on the latest episode of Jean Danker's podcast R U Okay?, the 38-year-old gamely shared more about how she navigates motherhood, and how she’s “done a lot of healing work” over the years to ensure that her past does not affect how she brings up her kids.

Sheila shared with Jean that after becoming a mother, she realised that she had to work to ensure that her relationship with her own mum would not affect her two-year-old daughter, Layla’s future.

"Motherhood has different challenges and triggers, and I think the biggest trigger of it all is probably my relationship with my mum. It’s something that I kind of knew was coming, but I didn't see it happening in such a big way, so I think that was very trying for me, as I tried to work out the questions that I had throughout my childhood,” shared Sheila, whose parents split up when she was 12.

"I have a great relationship with my grandmother, she was my hero growing up. I feel very fortunate to be growing up in that kind of love, and now I want Layla to experience the same thing. I don't want her to not have that [relationship with her grandmother] 'cos of what I have with my mum,” Sheila went on to share.

Apart from that, Sheila also spoke about how her husband, Deon Woo, 41, is always been there for her as they navigate through parenthood together.

"He has been very very hands on, he actually quit his job and stayed home with us for nine months just so we can spend time together. That period of nine months was just so precious,” Sheila said, revealing that Deon only went back to work recently.

“[The break] happened when I was pregnant, and he was there in the first trimester, taking care of me. I was very tired and nauseous, and he was there. Now that he's back to work, we have very little of him, but I really appreciate him being there for us in the last nine months,” she added.

8days.sg dropped Sheila a call to find out more. When we managed to speak with Sheila on a weekday evening, the actress was ever-so-chipper, despite having what she described as a “chaotic day”.

Family time.

She revealed during our call that while they were slightly worried about their finances, the opportunity for Deon to move on from his previous job came at the right time for them.

“There were adjustment that we had to make, both [during his break and after that], but I think all in all, I'm glad we had that time [together],” she shared, adding, "It was very hard [for us] when he left for work again. I mean he was around all the time. Even Layla felt it,” she said.

"Every day was just really nice 'cos Layla hadn't gone to school then. So every morning when he wakes up, it would be just us going to Layla's room together. It was a really sweet routine, where he would read to Layla the whole morning, while I'm preparing breakfast, and then we would have breakfast together,” Sheila revealed.

Apart from getting to know each other better all over again, the biggest takeaway from the past nine months was just getting to spend time together as a family, and well, enjoying the freedom of getting to go out to child-friendly places without having to deal with the weekend crowd.

"'We had the luxury of time, so we could go to a lot of places that were always crowded on weekends [like the museum or the zoo]. You don't have to queue for tickets, fight the crowd, or plan in advance, you can just go whenever, and usually there'll be slots free 'cos it's not so crowded on weekdays,” she said.
