Sunny Side Up Stars Shawn Thia And Xenia Tan Are Engaged; He Proposed While Filming A TikTok Video
Shawn originally had much grander plans for the proposal… but it fell through ‘cos his now-fiancée got COVID.

Okay, you might turn up your nose at a “TikTok proposal”, but trust us when we say that this is seriously cute.
On May 18, local celebs Shawn Thia, 26 and Xenia Tan, 27, posted a video of them together, filmed as part of a TikTok trend, where couples (or friends!) piece together short videos of themselves at different scenic spots to an upbeat song.
Then, in the very last clip, Shawn stops in his tracks mid-dance, before reaching into his pocket to pull out a ring and getting down on one knee.
While the video managed to capture Xenia’s adorably flustered reaction, it cuts out before we see the big “yes" moment.
But worry not, she definitely accepted the proposal.
Many celebs have since left comments on their post, congratulating the happy couple, including Eswari Gunasagar, Sonia Chew, Gini Chang, and Joel Choo.
You probably know Shawn as the star of various local productions, including Reunion, Titoudao: Inspired by the True Story of a Wayang Star, and 128 Circle.
Xenia is also an actor, and got her start as a talent under media portal The Smart Local.
The couple are currently starring in Mediacorp’s latest English long-form drama, Sunny Side Up.
Though it’s not known when the couple first started dating, it's believed that sparks first started to fly between them when they worked together on The Algorithm, a six-episode drama series produced by The Smart Local, and commissioned by Mediacorp.
On May 23, Shawn shared more about the big proposal, revealing that the original plan was not to propose through a TikTok video. Rather, he had an entirely different kind of proposal mapped out.
"I started planning this proposal a couple of months back. The initial plan was Jeju. Golden hour. Two of us. Overlooking the waves on top of a hill. How romantic? I know,” he wrote.
Shawn shared that he tasked a close friend to act as a photographer and ring “guardian" during the trip.
However, just a few hours before their flight, Xenia tested positive for COVID-19.
"Dead [COVID-19] virus can take up to 3months to shed off after recovery. The plan failed before it even begun,” he wrote.
In the end, instead of heading to Korea, they booked a flight to London without their photographer, who was already in Seoul.
But still, the proposal happened, and it went very, very, well, with one small hitch — "Didn’t know the ring was to be worn on the left hand. Man’s nervous ok? Now I know,” Shawn wrote.
"We didn't get the perfect photo of the proposal. But now we have good memories & unforgettable stories to share. This to us is way more precious than the former,” he concluded.
