Shane Pow Has A Clever Way Of Dodging CNY Marriage Questions

Local actor Shane Pow, 35, might be luckier than many of his peers. Speaking to 8world in a recent interview, he reveals that his parents never pressure him about marriage, knowing that “it wouldn’t work to push” him.

It's why he wasn't worried about facing the usual pointed questions from relatives about relationships and marriage during Chinese New Year.

“It’s tough for them to get me to say anything! I just avoid giving a direct answer,” Shane says.

He adds that his relatives usually don’t intentionally pry, and when they do, he simply responds with a smile.

On whether he has set an age for marriage, Shane says he takes things as they come: “Right now, I’m focused on my career. When the time comes, I’ll give it my all.”

When asked about his current relationship status, Shane demonstrates just how skilled he is at dodging questions, smiling as he replies: "I've always been happy, and that happiness comes from my work. Overall, I'm very content."

While on the topic of celebrating the new year, Shane shares just how much he enjoys this festive season: “Usually, I have hotpot with my family every year, and on the first three days of the New Year, I go around to visit relatives.”

He also gives his parents a generous red packet of S$888 each yearly.

“I started with S$168, then increased it to $288, then $688, and eventually settled on $888 because it sounds lucky,” he explains.

This year, Shane has slightly different plans. Having snagged discounted flight tickets earlier, he plans to travel to Japan after the sixth day of Chinese New Year.

“I rarely go abroad during the New Year because I’m usually filming,” he says, adding that his latest project just wrapped, leaving him a rare window for an overseas trip.

As for things on the work front, Shane, whose directorial debut was the short film Remember Us This Way (2019), reveals he’s been working on movie script.

“I’ve been very busy lately. The first draft has been sitting there for a while, and I haven’t restarted it yet. I hope to have time to finish it this year,” he says.

He’s keeping the film’s theme under wraps but mentions it will include comedic elements while remaining artistic rather than slapstick. He also hopes to showcase the finished work at international film festivals.

He hasn’t ruled out the possibility of writing, directing, and starring in the film himself. He also adds that if he can get investors on board, he hopes to cast a well-known local actress as the female lead.
