Sengkang Resident Complains About “Exceptionally” Loud Aircraft Noise In The Area

Imagine doing a zoom call and a plane flies overhead... every time.

Sengkang Resident Complains About “Exceptionally” Loud Aircraft Noise In The Area

Imagine working from home, only to be distracted by the constant loud whooshes of aircrafts flying overhead.

A resident of Sengkang, Alson, took to Xiao Hong Shu to share about his troubles with noise.

He wrote: “This area of Sengkang is too noisy. I don’t know if anyone relates. I moved here not long ago, and I work from home. In the span of half an hour, I counted five to six planes flying overhead. Judging by the exceptionally loud noise, they were probably jets.”

To make the situation worse, one of the neighbouring flats is also undergoing renovation. The ruckus from the renovation, combined with noise from the jets have made his living conditions nearly unbearable.

“If the noises from the planes persist, I don’t have to attend any online meetings anymore. Are there other neighbourhoods that experience the same noise?” added Alson.

It seems like Alson’s experience is not unique to him alone, with netizens living in Punggol, Potong Pasir, Buangkok, and Hougang chiming in to share about similar experiences.

One netizen lamented: “I live in Punggol, and it’s as noisy here. My cat always gets shocked awake by the noise. I work at Greenwich Drive, and the sound is as loud. Sometimes, you can even feel the building shaking slightly. We often have to pause our meetings for a few minutes [due to the loud noise], it’s a waste of time.”

Alson may not be able to see the jets from his place, but he can definitely hear them

Despite the many, many complaints from dissatisfied residents, there were also a handful that said that they’ve “already gotten used to the noise”.

“No choice, you can either live with it or move away,” wrote one netizen, while another suggested that affected residents can look into “soundproofing their houses”.

Um... but who's going to pay for that?

It looks like the areas affected are not located far from the Paya Lebar Air Base, and the sounds are likely caused by Air Force jets during training sessions.

Some also said they “don’t mind the noise at all” as it reminds them of how hard the Singapore Air Force works to keep the country safe.

8days.sg spoke to a resident living in Punggol’s Northshore estate, and she too, confirms that she hears “super noisy planes” regularly.

According to a statement from Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Yeo Wan Ling in 2023, the Paya Lebar Airbase will be “relocated nearer to the coast from 2030 onwards, reducing the number of RSAF planes flying overhead Punggol residents”.

Well, that's still six years away.

If you have your eyes set on a house in any of the above-mentioned neighbourhoods, perhaps you’d want to consider exploring other options first?
