8 Of Our Favourite PM Lee Instagram Posts From Over The Years
Today (May 15), Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong steps down after 20 years of helming Singapore’s government. Stepping in to fill his shoes is Lawrence Wong.
From the magic cup he sipped from when he addressed the nation, to his #jalanjalan photos on social media, PM Lee has created so many iconic moments and trending topics, one can say he's Singapore's top influencer.
8days.sg scrolled through the now Senior Minister's Instagram account, which he started in April 2012, to pick out some of our favourite posts from the man himself.
National Selfie Day, June 21, 2023
Garnering almost 60K likes, this is PM Lee's top IG post on his page.
"Almost everyone has a smartphone nowadays, so selfie-taking is a given — especially when we explore new places and meet new people. I visited the Botanic Gardens recently to #jalanjalan and tried out a "0.5 selfie"! Took some practice before I was satisfied with the result — though my arm was pretty tired by then," wrote PM Lee, along with a grinning face with sweat emoji.
He also asked for his followers to leave him some advice in the comments on how he can "improve [his] selfie game".
Some of our parents aren't even aware of what '0.5 selfies' are, so how cool is it that the 72-year-old is still so in-touch with the trends?
When PM Lee was on leave, December 18, 2022
PM Lee is a great photographer, as evident in this shot of the Grand-Place in Brussels. He was on vacay during this period of time, but still promised to "update should [he] come across anything interesting".
"I remember seeing it lit up at night on a trip to Brussels 50 years ago, and was happy finally to see it again beautifully dressed for the season," he wrote.
Heroes Of Our Time exhibition, March 16, 2021
PM Lee led by example during the pandemic, consistently encouraging Singaporeans to get vaccinated and stay safe amid a trying time.
He recreated the moment he received his vaccine in this shot, and encouraged his followers to visit the exhibition, which was held at Ion Orchard, and featured art pieces which paid tribute to Singapore's front-liners.
PM Lee and Joseph Schooling, August 15, 2016
Everyone, including PM Lee, wanted a selfie with Joseph Schooling after he came home with Singapore's first Olympic gold medal.
He captioned the pic: "Met Joseph Schooling and his parents, before the Parliamentary motion. Usually people ask me for selfies, but today I felt so proud to ask Joseph for one! :)"
Two Singaporean icons in one photo.
PM Lee and Ho Ching, February 15, 2016
In true Insta-bf fashion, PM Lee shared this adorable photo taken with his wife in celebration of Valentine's Day that year.
#Throwback, January 13, 2016
Don't we all love a good throwback shot?
Asking his followers to share their favourite memories of the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Safari and Bird Park, PM Lee wrote: "I have a vivid memory of a Harris hawk perching on my hand, when I opened the Fuji Hawk Centre (now the Hawk Arena) at the Bird Park long ago (in 1988)."
Some internet folks weren't even born in the year 1988, so this was a nice glimpse at how he used to look back then.
#RememberingLeeKuanYew, March 26, 2015
He wrote a heartfelt message in remembrance of his parents three days after his dad, Lee Kuan Yew, passed away at the age of 91. His mum, Kwa Geok Choo, died in 2010, aged 89.
"My parents at the Bridge of Sighs in Cambridge. It was one of their favourite spots in Cambridge. They took a picture there when they were students, and would try to see it again every time they visited Cambridge. The second picture (top right) was when they came for my graduation in 1974 — so I must have been standing around somewhere. The third (bottom) was in old age, happy and healthy, in 2000. Now they have both left. May they rest in peace," wrote PM Lee.
#guesswhere?, September 19, 2014
Just one of Pm Lee's multiple #guesswhere shots. (The answer: Cavenagh Bridge, at Boat Quay along the Singapore River.)
He really has the ability to capture Singapore in the most beautiful ways, doesn't he?
