"[Bunk Beds] Better Than NS": S'poreans React To Newly-Furnished Migrant Workers' Domitories

Westlite Accommodation, which runs migrant worker housing across Singapore and Malaysia, recently shared a clip showing viewers around a refurbished dormitory, and it's gotten people talking. 

A representative from the organisation began by showcasing the double-decker bed frames used by the workers. But it's not just any regular bunk bed - the practical design that maximises functionality is pretty impressive.

Made of metal, the bunks are “very heavy and sturdy,” he said, adding that they don’t shake at all. Even if the person on the top bunk moves, the resident below won’t feel it, as the upper and lower structures are built separately.

Each bed nook comes fully equipped with shelves, a reading light, charging outlets, a hanger, and poles for workers to hang items like clothes and towels within their personal space. Upon closer look, the room appears to accommodate about 10 residents across five bunk beds.

Every bunk also features a privacy screen at the foot of the bed, which doubles as a pegboard. The holes in the metal screen not only allows for ventilation, but also lets residents attach hooks to hang additional belongings.

The room itself is spacious and includes a metal locker for each resident, along with a passcode-protected drawer for storing valuables. 

Each room also has a communal area for residents to chat or eat together. The space also includes a multi-tier shoe rack and a designated area for residents to store their luggage.

Beyond that, the room is equipped with a communal fridge, a dedicated kitchen fitted with induction cookers and a washing machine, and is connected to an ensuite bathroom with multiple shower stalls.

It appears that Singaporeans had plenty of positive things to say about the upgraded workers’ dorms, with many chiming in to share their thoughts on the design.

A number praised the dorms for being well furnished and for providing workers with a comfortable living environment, as they deserve.

Some said the bed quality looks “better than [those in] NS,” while another echoed, “Those bunk beds can also do for the NS boys at Tekong.”

Another quipped, “Much better than my uni dorm.”

“Kudos! Suitable for student hostels too!” said another.

However, some also pointed out that the toilet appeared to be “right next to the kitchen without a door,” while another added, “Maybe in the future can install a few big ceiling fans, it would be so much more cooling than the multiple wall fans.”
