Taiwanese Variety Show Host Started Tearing After Mark Lee Did This Live On Set
The 57-year-old even jokingly asked if Don’t Worry It’s Ok host Miao Keli needed to touch up her make up after.
It's not every day you make someone cry on TV, but that's what Mark Lee did — and he still received praise for it.
Yes, really.
The 57-year-old actor-comedian recently appeared in an episode of Taiwanese variety show Don’t Worry It’s Ok (阿姐萬歲) to promote his upcoming film Uncle Odyssey, which also stars Christopher Lee.
During the episode, co-host Chen Mengxian challenged Mark to demonstrate acting out a sad scene, and how such performances have evolved over the years.
Mark’s monologue in Hokkien hit way harder than anyone expected — even co-host Miao Keli was seen tearing.
“What’s wrong with you?” he first joked in true Mark Lee style, before apologising and asking if she needed to touch up her make-up.
“I’m a ‘real actress’, and do not care about such things. Being ugly is fine,” Keli replied.
Without missing a beat, Mark responded by asking if her eyelashes had fallen off.
Are we surprised, though? The guy was nominated for Best Leading Actor at the Golden Horse Awards 2020, after all.
Both Keli and Mengxian went on to praise Mark, to which he humbly responded by saying his acting isn’t about talent, but about life.
Mark, who started out in the iconic comedy show Comedy Nite in the 1980s, said he only began to truly understand acting after getting married and starting a family.
He has been married to Catherine Ng for 26 years, and they have three children: Calista, 17, Maksonn, 14, and Calynn, 12.
“From my wife’s pregnancy, seeing it as a foetus, to becoming a baby, I am amazed by the human journey,” he shared.
Mark spoke candidly about going through ups and downs in life, including moments where he felt disrespected.
He also said that human emotions don’t come instantly but take time to develop.
“It is like when we eat something, absorb what we need, and discard the rest,” he said.
When the hosts asked Mark how an actor remembers all their lines while filming, he recalled that he was always good at remembering his part.
“I once did a show where I had two pages [of script], and hurried the director, who told me to quickly memorise my lines,” he said.
“I told him that for actors who have acted in movies are more than capable, though I regretted it later, because there was suddenly a lot of pressure,” Mark quipped, adding he was then worried that he would be called out.
“Now, I can remember up to the parts of five actors, and the rundown,” he said, adding it comes from many years of practice and using a technique where he is able to act it out like a one-man show.
“It’s not because I’m talented. But it is how we function. We take all the lines in a film, and digest it," he said, adding that his key rule is understanding the core of the story.
“If the story is about a sister, then everyone else is supporting. That way, you know your role, when to speak, and how to carry the scene forward,” he explained.
