Mariah Carey Fans Argue Over Sitting Or Standing During Singapore Concert

TikTok users are divided after concertgoers argued mid-show about staying seated versus standing for the pop diva.

Mariah Carey Fans Argue Over Sitting Or Standing During Singapore Concert

Pop diva Mariah Carey lit up Singapore last night (Oct 8) with her The Celebration of Mimi concert, and yes, it was everything her Lambs had been waiting for. Held at the Arena @ Expo, the show marked her first return to our shores since 2018, and fans were more than ready to sing, sway, and belt out every high note right along with her.

Unfortunately, not everyone had a 'Fantasy' of a night. And it wasn’t Mimi's fault. The real issue? The people some fans had the misfortune of sitting next to.

Taking to TikTok to spill about her night, concertgoer @sha_nikita didn’t hold back.

“When I came to my seat, there was this lady sitting behind us going, ‘You need to sit! Sit down! This is a sitting concert!’” she recalled.

Sha’s Singaporean friend, who attended the show with her, wasn’t having it. She told the lady sitting behind them that they were going to stand ‘cos “it’s Mariah Carey”.

That wasn’t enough for the lady, who insisted Sha and her friend stay glued to their chairs.

Sha then name-dropped VH1 icons Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Tina Turner, and Aretha Franklin before declaring that she was not about to stay seated for "Mariah freaking Carey".

“I get that people in Singapore sit, and I’m not trying to be one of those people who don’t care about the rules, [but] Mariah Carey is an icon,” added Sha.

Her passionate rant struck a chord with concertgoers, many of whom flooded the comments in agreement. Some said they had similar experiences that night.

One commenter joked, “I think Mariah was disappointed to see everyone sitting,” while another added, “If you sit at a Mariah Carey concert, you’re at the wrong show!”

Others chalked it up to a “Singapore thing”, where audiences are more likely to stay seated, phones out, recording content to post later.

And it turns out, Sha wasn’t the only one in a showdown.

In another viral clip from the concert, a woman standing up to dance was shouted at by a man behind her yelling: “You’re blocking my view!” Her comeback? “You’re crazy! This is a concert!” To which he snapped back, “So? If you want to stand, stand outside!”

Cue the comment section chaos. Some blasted the “boring crowd”, saying, “If you’re gonna sit quietly and record, just stay home and watch YouTube.”

But not everyone agreed. A few netizens pointed out that the event organisers had rules about remaining seated due to the smaller venue, adding that standing could easily block the view for others.

“What if that person has a condition and can’t stand for long?” one reasoned. Another said, “I’m old, and I just don’t get why people stand when there are seats. Isn’t it inconsiderate?”

So… sit or stand?
