It has been more than a decade since former technician Tan Whee Boon was rushed to the hospital after eating raw fish porridge — a meal that would change his life forever.

The now 59-year-old lost all four limbs due to severe infection complications, and in a recent TikTok video for faith-based platform @hhm.sg, Whee Boon tearfully recounted the ordeal and how his faith helped him overcome despair.

Back in 2015, Whee Boon lost consciousness just two hours after the meal and remained in a coma for two weeks.

“When I woke up, my hands and feet were bandaged, and I could feel pain. I had a tube in my mouth, and even when I wanted to communicate, it was impossible. I could only move my eyes,” he recalled.

Doctors later told him that while an emergency medication had saved his organs, it also caused his blood vessels to constrict, cutting off oxygen to his limbs and resulting in gangrene.

“I was most worried about my two kids. They were only 14 and 15 then,” he said. “I couldn’t earn a living to provide for them," he recalled.

During his hospital stay, a colleague visited and shared the Christian faith with him, something Whee Boon had dismissed for years.

"This time, I accepted because I was beyond hope,” said Whee Boon, adding that his newfound faith brought him peace mid pain.

Before his amputation surgery, Whee Boon prayed for just one thing — that he wouldn’t feel pain.

“After the operation, there was really no pain. I thought that was amazing,” he said.

More than nine years later, Whee Boon says he feels blessed.

“The way I see things is different from others. Since the incident, I can honestly say I have never gone hungry. I have enough to eat every day, I can sleep well, and I have peace and sufficient provisions.”

Today, Whee Boon works as a drafter at a construction company and leads an active life.

Since 2016, he has participated in dragon boating, badminton, table tennis, wheelchair rugby, and even scuba diving.
