Lim Peifen Once Found A Cockroach In Her Siew Mai From A Local Dim Sum Chain

“My friend chose to work on the siew mai first, while I went straight for the har gao (which was too dry for my liking). After finishing my first har gao, I took a bite of siew mai. While chewing, I noticed this alien looking strand of what I thought was thread sticking out from under another siew mai that was still untouched, so I used my chopsticks to try and remove it,” Peifen wrote.

By now, you’d probably have guess what this “thread” was right? It was the feeler of a dead cockroach. And according to Peifen, its entire corpse was “wedged firmly into the base of the otherwise perfectly edible siew mai”.

Disgusted, Peifen immediately spat out the siew mai.

She went on to share that she was “too shocked to kick up a big fuss”, or even remember to take a picture of said siew mai. Instead, she called the waitress over to ask for a refund of the siew mai only, and continued having her breakfast while “obsessively prying open” the rest of the dim sum to ensure that they were safe for consumption.

“What was I thinking? Why didn't I ask for a refund of everything and leave? Why didn't I at least scream : ’Aaaaah! Cockroach!’, and let all the other patrons know that their siew mai weren't exactly safe to eat? Well, guess I was just too sickened,” wrote Peifen.

Yikes. No wonder Peifen stopped “eating siew mai for a long time” after that horrifying experience. We would too.
