Li Nanxing Had No Idea Illegal Betting Site Used His Video To Encourage People To Gamble Until Police Told Him About It
In this day and age, can we still trust anything we see online?
Recently, Ah Ge Li Nanxing took to his Facebook to highlight that a testimony he did for a church event had been repurposed illegally by an online gambling site.
"When I shared my testimony in church, I mentioned that it was through God that my life was restored, not through gambling. Please do not be misled by any other sources that try to claim otherwise," urged the 59-year-old actor.
So what exactly did the site do with Nanxing's clip?
According to Nanxing, during his speech, he shared about the time he came clean about a S$2mil gambling debt he had back in the '90s on Mediacorp host Guo Liang's talkshow The Inner Circle.
At that time, Nanxing was dealing with a failed business venture which led him to borrow money from the bank, his friends and even loan sharks.
Not being able to deal with the snowballing debt, Nanxing then frequented the Genting Highlands' casino in hopes of recouping some of his losses there.
It was obviously not a good idea.
In fact, Nanxing confessed that he once finally managed to save S$200K only to gamble it away in the casino almost immediately.
Sadly, what was meant to be an inspirational and uplifting testimony was unfortunately abused by the illegal betting site, which used Nanxing's speech to encourage others to gamble.
The worst part? Nanxing didn't even know that his clip had been used until the police informed him.
This is not the first time Nanxing's information has been misused by scammers.
In June this year, Nanxing's pictures — together with Shane Pow, Constance Song and Vincent Ng's — were used in a digital fraud scheme.
Last January, Nanxing's Instagram was also hacked by scammers who attempted to borrow money from the actor's friends.
So, moral of the story? Be extra careful on the Internet because anything can turn out to be a fraud these days.
