Lawrence Wong's Young Nephew Saw An "Uncle" In His Childhood Bedroom, But No One Was There
Kids sometimes say things that make adults stop in their tracks for different reasons, including this hair-raising remark by actor Lawrence Wong's nephew.
It all began when his young nephew appeared to notice someone in his childhood bedroom.
Someone Lawrence himself couldn't see.
Speaking to 8days.sg, the 38-year-old Malaysia-born Singaporean actor says the unexplained encounter took place sometime in the early 2010s.
By then, The Story of Yanxi Palace actor was already based in Singapore but had returned to his family home in Johor Bahru for Chinese New Year.
"It was Chinese New Year, the house was full of family, so there were people outside and downstairs. That somehow made [the incident] stranger because it wasn't like we were alone in an empty house in the middle of the night,” Lawrence tells us.
Lawrence was in his old bedroom with his nephew, who was around three or four at the time.
While in Lawrence's bedroom, his nephew suddenly became fixated on a corner near the dressing table and referred to an "uncle" standing there.
Lawrence couldn't see anyone, and initially, he brushed it off as his nephew playing around.
The boy, however, continued looking towards the same spot and appeared confused as to why Lawrence wasn't acknowledging whoever he thought was there.
Lawrence asked what the "uncle" looked like, though he doesn't remember getting much of a description.
"What freaked me out was how certain he was that somebody was there," Lawrence recalls.
"To him, it wasn't scary or unusual. He was basically asking me why I wasn't acknowledging this other person in the room."
What made the encounter particularly unnerving was that his nephew appeared to think this "uncle" was looking at Lawrence.
Yikes! Not exactly the kind of attention you want from someone you can't see.
According to Lawrence, the ceiling fan in his childhood bedroom suddenly began moving.
"It was an old ceiling fan in my childhood bedroom and, from what I remember, it hadn't been used in years," Lawrence tells us.
He wasn't staying in the room regularly anymore, so nobody had bothered doing anything about it.
More importantly, Lawrence says the fan was switched off.
"That was the part that really got to me. I hadn't switched it on. I remember looking at it and thinking, why is this moving?" he says.
He also remembers his nephew looking upwards around that area while talking about the mysterious "uncle".
That was enough for Lawrence, who called his family over.
When Lawrence told his dad what had happened, there wasn't some dramatic revelation about a long-rumoured spirit in the bedroom.
His father didn't know of any particular ghost story connected to the room.
Instead, Lawrence remembers his response being along the lines of not thinking too much about it and not disturbing anything.
"That very Asian-parent response where somehow saying less makes it even scarier," Lawrence says.
His nephew, meanwhile, was apparently completely unfazed. "I was probably much more affected by it than he was," Lawrence says.
According to Lawrence, the boy had previously reacted to or spoken about people the rest of the family couldn't see.
"It wasn't just this one incident. The strange thing was that he was too young to really understand the idea of ghosts, so he would just describe what he thought he was seeing very matter-of-factly,” he says.
That was why the adults in the family had started wondering if the boy could somehow see things they couldn't.
Now grown up, his nephew no longer claims to see such things and Lawrence doesn't think he remembers the mysterious "uncle". He was so young when it happened. It probably stayed with me much more than it stayed with him,” he added.
Despite what happened, Lawrence didn't subsequently avoid his childhood bedroom, but says he doesn't remember anything as strange happening again.
But the experience did change how the room felt to him.
"Obviously after something like that, you look at the room differently. Every little sound suddenly becomes very noticeable,” he says.
Lawrence stops short of saying the room was haunted.
"I wouldn't say I became convinced the room was haunted, but I definitely never forgot what happened that day."
Brave. If it were us, we will only return if forced to.
