Kayly Loh, 37, Is 4 Months Pregnant; Asked ChatGPT About Her IVF Blood Test Results
Kayly Loh is going to be a mummy very soon!
The 37-year-old Mediacorp actress, who tied the knot with commercial director Jonathan Chong, 39, in 2021, is currently four months pregnant with their first child — a baby boy.
On a call with 8days.sg on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, Kayly bashfully admits to us she was actually hoping for the baby to be a girl because she of her niece, who was the "first baby" in her family.
"She's very sweet, very cute, so it made me feel like I want a girl. My husband was hoping for a boy lah, so I guess he won," she chuckles, adding that her parents are "quite happy" to finally have both a grandson and granddaughter.
While many assumed Jonathan would be rooting for a daddy’s girl, Kayly shared that her husband was concerned he “wouldn’t have the heart to discipline the child” if they had a daughter.
"If it's a boy it's easier. Yes, he's going to be the bad cop, I'm the good cop," she laughs.
The actress also reveals that the baby was conceived through IVF, and that she and her husband received the good news at the same time.
"It was scheduled so we knew when we would confirm the results. That day happened to be our fourth wedding anniversary, it was very timely, but we also didn't know what to expect," she says.
At that time, they had gone hospital for blood tests but were told to return home to wait for the results. Yet while they were driving home, Kayly received a notification of the blood test results.
"It didn't say if it was positive or negative, it was all numbers. I actually asked my husband if I could screenshot the results and ask ChatGPT to help me analyse them. He was driving and he said okay," she recounts.
"The first sentence was "Yes it's positive", I started crying. He was very shocked and thought it was not-so-good news, so he was trying to comfort me. He was on the highway so he also couldn't stop his car."
The actress went on to share that they're "very blessed" to have successfully conceived on their first IVF attempt.
"We have a lot of friends who had multiple tries and some who never succeeded so we kept our expectations quite low," she explains.
The entire IVF process was also not easy, which was why they didn't dare to celebrate even after the result was positive.
According to Kayly, she and Jonathan agreed to spend two years enjoying married life before trying for a baby. However, they did not expect it to be so difficult to conceive.
They went for fertility checks and consulted a TCM physician, but were left more perplexed when the results all came back normal.
"There was nothing wrong, we were healthy, our markers were all great, but we just couldn't succeed. I think the difficult part was not knowing why, at least if there was a reason we could do something about it, but there was nothing for us to do" she tells us.
Eventually, their TCM doctor, whom they were already seeing for more than a year by then, advised them to go for IVF since they'd already done everything that they can.
Kayly's pregnancy has been "very good" thus far.
"Everyone says the first trimester is the torturous part, but I had no morning sickness, or no other symptoms," she says.
While it has been really smooth-sailing, Kayly says that sometimes also worries her. "Like, is there anything going on in my body?"
That said, it has been really hard for her to conceal her bump.
"It was IVF and there were some side effects, like bloating, so my stomach was very big even in the first month," she recalls, adding that she already couldn't fit into her trousers at that time.
"I was also filming at that time but thank god all my filming outfits were dresses, so I could fit into them. If I had to wear pants, it would have been a really big problem," she gushes.
Now that she's wrapped filming, Kayly tells us that she'd be temporarily taking a break from acting to focus on her pregnancy.
Meanwhile, she will continue running her floral business, Bucket Full of Roses, though her colleagues would help to take over some responsibilities to make sure she doesn't over-exert herself.
Her husband has also been "really taking care" of her ever since the start of her IVF journey.
"Because of the side effects, I was having difficulty eating and lying down. I couldn't sleep or walk, so from then he's been looking after me," she says.
"I think this also gives me a glimpse of what kind of father he will be. I think he would be quite nurturing and very caring," chirps Kayly.
The couple has yet to decide on a name, as they haven’t found one that isn’t linked to someone they know or what they call a “crazy Gen-Alpha name.”
