Huang Biren Says She Will Always Regret Choosing Work Over Her Grandma, Who Passed Away When The Actress Was Filming In China
She called herself “shameless” during the emotional confession on this week’s episode of Hear U Out.

It happened in 1995, when she was in Xinjiang, China filming Mediacorp drama Legend Of The White Hair Brides.
“Out of her 12 grandchildren, she doted on me the most and I’ve lived with her since I was young. I found out about her passing a week after we began filming. She was hospitalised when I was flying to Xinjiang, but she had been in and out of the hospital many times because of liver cancer so it wasn’t something out of the ordinary. I would call home often to ask about how she was doing and my family lied to me, saying that she was alright.”
One morning, it felt like her world was turned upside down when her family called her to deliver the devastating news.
Biren said: “I couldn’t believe what they were saying because they had been telling me that she was doing well during our daily calls. The production crew was very understanding and I dropped everything and came home. I couldn’t accept the fact that she was alive when I left Singapore but was lying in a coffin when I came back. My family didn’t close the coffin until I got back three days later. I was absolutely heartbroken.”

Even though she knew it was too late, Biren apologised to her grandma when she stood in front of her coffin.
“I felt like I was very unfilial for choosing work over family because I wanted a chance to prove myself,” she confessed. “I neglected my grandmother who raised me and watched me grow up. I even felt that I was shameless for leaving someone who loved me so much. It’s a regret that’s been with me since then, and there’s nothing I can ever do to make up for it. I told my grandma that I would work very hard and prove to her why I was so resolute about wanting to act.”
