This Is How Xiang Yun’s First Solo Holiday Got Hijacked By Her Husband Edmund Chen
The actress really wants to go on her first solo trip but that will have to wait for now.

Xiang Yun really wants to go on a solo trip. When she celebrated her 60th birthday in 2021, she even 'promised' herself to make this dream a reality. But, it seems like her plans will have to be shelved for now.
For those who follow the actress on Instagram, you’d know that the 61-year-old has been travelling in Taiwan for the past week or so with her husband, former actor Edmund Chen, 61, and an ex-colleague from Mediacorp’s celebrity management arm, The Celebrity Agency (TCA). But did you know that this trip was supposed to be Xiang Yun’s maiden solo holiday?
The star, who’s never travelled solo before, spoke to local media outlet 8world mid-holiday to share more.
As it turns out, Xiang Yun began making plans for her trip last September after travelling to New Zealand with Edmund, and their two kids — Chen Xi, 31, and Chen Yixin, 22.
“I'm going to turn 62 in October this year, but I’ve never travelled solo before. I wanted to leave my husband and kids aside, and travel alone to a place that I’m familiar with, for example, Taiwan or China. To be frank, I wouldn’t dare to walk around as I please when I’m alone. And [people in] these two places speak the language that I’m familiar with so you can say they are the most ideal destinations,” Xiang Yun shared.
Unfortunately, things fell through when Edmund hijacked the trip.
“Edmund's the type who likes to go out as a family. He originally planned to travel together to Japan this year, but our son’s preparing for his studies, while our daughter has to prepare for her new drama,” Xiang Yun shared.
She went on to add that she wasn’t planning to join the trio for their Japan trip, even before their kids backed out of it.
“In the end, after the kids bailed on their Japan holiday, when Edmund heard that I was planning to go to Taiwan, he kept saying that he wanted to come along too,” Xiang Yun revealed. And so, her dream of a solo trip was dashed.
But it seems like they’ve been having fun so far.
Xiang Yun shared that she managed to get in contact with Xiao Zhou, the tour guide who originally showed her around Taiwan 18 years ago. She added that their trip is pretty much free-and-easy, with Xiao Zhou acting as their guide and driver as they travel around the different parts of Taiwan.
“I really like the feeling that Taiwan gives off, it’s like the olden days. When I’m here, I definitely have to visit the cultural sites and attractions. We’ve seen the natural fountains and the power car trains, and tried Taiwan’s vegetarian food, as well as some Hakka restaurants,” Xiang Yun said.
Edmund also spoke to 8world. He revealed that he was prepared to just go along with the whims of the two women on the trip, and that he’s really liking everything thus far.
He even added that if he were to stay in Taiwan for a month, he’d probably be able to write a really great book.
When asked if she plans to meet up with former Mediacorp colleagues who are based in Taiwan this trip, Xiang Yun revealed that she will not be doing so.
The actress explained that they’ll pretty much have to head straight to the airport when they return to Taipei, which makes it hard to schedule a meet up. She also added that she feels bad to infringe on Edmund and her friend’s time just to catch up with her ex-colleagues.
But hey, this just means that there’s even more reason for Xiang Yun to return to Taiwan soon, and hopefully, fulfil her dream of travelling solo at the same, time, right?
“I've never forgotten my initial goal, for my next trip, I’ll definitely travel solo!” she laughed.
