They say that when you hit rock bottom, the only way is up. That was definitely true for 39-year-old TVB actor Him Law, who is sometimes better known as the husband of Hong Kong actress Tavia Yeung, 44.

In the latest episode of Mediacorp talk show Hear U Out, Him met host Quan Yifeng in a cafe in Singapore and the pair chatted about everything, including how his career took a severe hit in its early days.

"I once made headlines when the media said I sold my body. They called me a certain type of animal, the type that's commonly found in a pond," he laughed.

The animal Him was referring to is a "duck", which is what the Chinese call a gigolo.

"I thought that was it for my career. All my hard work in the past was gone over night," he recalled.

Thankfully, Him had many producer friends who assuaged his worries. One such friend was the producer of 2012 hit TVB drama The Hippocratic Crush, the show that went on to propel the actor to fame.

"When I was at my lowest, he told me: 'Don't worry, I will help you'. He then cast me in the show. The drama salvaged my popularity and it was also how I met my wife," he laughed.

Him went on to talk about his love story with Tavia, who was one of TVB's biggest stars at that time, and how it unfolded.

It was love at first sight for Him, who recalled: "I saw this girl on set and felt that she was really independent. She's so strong. She doesn't need me to take care of her. She will look after me (laughs)."

"It was very fresh to me. In the past, when I dated girls younger than me, I had to plan for so many things but [Tavia] can plan for herself. She knows what she wants. She can even advise me [on things], and that was exactly what I needed at that time. Someone who can control me."

Him then mused that his career wouldn't have taken off if it weren't for Tavia, whom he married in 2016.

"I was very playful that's why I needed someone more stable. I liked to go to clubs, and would be in relationships for fun," he revealed, adding that he got rid of all his bad habits after he got together with the actress.

How did Him manage to win Tavia's heart?

"I first organised group outings to theme parks and would stick by her side the whole time. It was very obvious and she realised [my intentions] very soon," he said.

He also confessed to Tavia in "very dangerous" way. "Please do not follow what I did," he emphasised.

"Once we were on a date, and at that time, she was still considering [if she would accept me as her boyfriend]. We went to an empty beach and I asked: "What can I do for you to give me a chance?". She said, 'You swim into the ocean and to the lifeguard tower and scream that you like me.' She was joking but I just took my shirt off and swam out," said Him.

He continued: "On hindsight, she realised how dangerous it was because she can't swim and couldn't save me if anything happened."

Lucky for Him, he was a lifeguard before joining showbiz and had mad swimming skills. Basically, Tavia's challenge was a piece of cake.

While he doesn't remember how long it took for him to win Tavia over, Him revealed that it wasn't exactly easy as she had other suitors, who were also from showbiz, at that time.

"What made you so brave then?," asked Yifeng.

Him replied: "I had nothing to lose. It would be totally expected if I didn't get her!"

The actor also didn't care about what others had to say about their relationship.

"Many people felt that we wouldn't last. They said I was using her to gain popularity and that I wasn't good enough for her. The former was definitely untrue. As for me being undeserving, I agreed with them," he laughed.

He added: "I thought: 'It's okay, she did enter showbiz before me. She's supposed to be more famous than I am!". If I work hard, that wouldn't be a problem [in the future]. Actors have a longer shelf life anyway".

What about Tavia being five years older?

"That's exactly the thing I like about her! She can control me and she made me feel secure. I wouldn't care about other things anymore or want to meet other girls. I just wanted to focus on my work," he explained.
