Henry Thia, Jack Neo, Mark Lee Tear Up After Hearing Late Actress Lai Meng’s Voice On M’sian Radio
The late Malaysian actress, who played the trio's mother in Money No Enough 2, was fondly remembered for her iconic line: “Have you eaten?”
Jack Neo, Mark Lee, and Henry Thia recently visited Malaysia to promote their new CNY movie Money No Enough 3.
During their time there, they were guests on radio station Eight FM, where they received a bittersweet surprise from DJ Hana.
Jack, Mark, and Henry were initially told they were going to receive a call from a listener.
The twist was Hana and her team had secretly prepared a voice recording from late Malaysian actress, Datuk Lai Meng.
Lai Meng played the trio’s mum in the 2008 film Money No Enough 2. She reprised her role a year later in the horror film Where Got Ghost?
In both films, she was known for asking the actors, who played brothers, this now-iconic line: "Have you eaten?" (你吃饱了没?)
The station prepared a clip from a past interview Lai Meng gave, in which she mentioned all three actors by name and repeated her iconic line.
She also spoke about how Henry would continue calling her “mother” even after they were done with filming.
Henry teared up upon hearing her voice as did Mark, whose voice was filled with emotion as he fondly recalled his time with the actress.
“Aunty Lai Meng is a very professional actress, and she never took advantage of her seniority. She always memorised her scripts well, and even remembered all our lines so she wouldn’t cause any delay to filming. She knew she was older and moved around slower, and always made an effort to leave for the [filming site] very early.”
Lai Meng retired from showbiz in 2017, and passed away at 89 in 2018 after suffering a stroke.
