Hazelle Teo & Fiancé Reveal Why Paying “Just His Share” Led To Awkward Argument

In the latest episode of their podcast Couple’s Classroom, Yes 933 DJ Hazelle Teo, 31, and her pianist fiancé James Wong, 26, opened up about all things money-related — from who paid the bill on their first date (Hazelle, in case you’re wondering) to who is the bigger spender (also Hazelle).

It’s no secret that money can put a strain on a relationship, especially when both parties are not on the same page. That’s why communication is important and that’s something Hazelle and James wholeheartedly agree on.

Though both come from humble backgrounds as one of three children, Hazelle is the more generous of the two, often putting happiness first and showering loved ones with gifts.

James, who has grown more generous over time, is naturally more practical. He’s always thinking ahead — saving for their future together and even planning for the four children Hazelle hopes to have.

While they admit they’re fortunate enough to afford the things they want now, money can still be a touchy topic, and tense conversations do surface from time to time.

Recalling a recent argument they had about money, James shares: “Just a couple of weeks ago, Hazy, I and maybe six of our other friends went out to have lunch. We were happily eating and when it was time to pay, my brother, Joseph, went to pay the bill first because he was closest to the counter.”

After settling the bill, the group went their separate ways. That evening, Joseph shared a photo of the receipt in the group chat, letting everyone know their share was S$25. Without thinking much about it, James transferred his brother the amount.

“Without transferring my share,” declares Hazelle.

Oh no

“That’s when the disagreement [arose],” says James. “Hazy came back and she asked me ‘Hey, did you transfer my share of $25 to Joseph?’, and I told her I only transferred my share. That’s when she went 'Why didn’t you transfer my share as well?’.”

Hazelle jumps in: “To me, we are one unit. If I had seen the receipt first, I would have transferred $50 to Joseph on behalf of James and myself. I don’t know why he would transfer for himself and not for me.”

James admits their differences stem from assumptions. It wasn’t about the money — since the repayment came just hours later and they weren’t even together — he simply wanted to settle his share before it slipped his mind.

“After [Hazelle came back and explained her point of view], it got me thinking that I should have transferred both our shares to Joseph in the first place,” he adds.

Hazelle explains: “I’m not saying it’s a must, but it would have been nice if you considered me while transferring to your brother. I would have done the same for you. I just feel like it’s a sweet gesture.”

As for James, he now knows to transfer both their shares should they find themselves in a similar situation again.

So are you the type to transfer just your share or would you cover your partner’s too? And is there really a right or wrong answer?
