Getai Singer Wang Lei Has Become A Weibo Sensation For His ‘Fish Selling Bro’ Live Streams
His fans in China are now looking for ways to bypass the Facebook ban there so they can view his live streams.
Getai singer and actor Wang Lei has been a very busy man as of late. With his showbiz career slowing down 'cos of the COVID-19 pandemic, he has turned to selling frozen seafood through Facebook live streams. And business is booming.
His broadcasts have become so popular that memes and remixes of his streams have popped up all over social media. The 59-year-old is now affectionately known as ‘mai yu ge’, or ‘fish selling bro’, by netizens who tune in to his frequent streams.
It’s not just those who are looking for a good deal who are tuning in, netizens are also loving how the foul-mouthed compere gets annoyed with the ridiculous questions his followers ask during his live streams.
He is not impressed
Recordings of his clips have gained so much traction online that they’ve become something of a sensation on Weibo. On May 15, a meme account posted one of his videos and it has since racked up an impressive 2.3 million views, 12,200 reposts, 6,800 comments and 26,900 likes, with the numbers still going strong.
The topic 'Wang Lei's Fish Selling Diaries', also made it to the 20th spot of Weibo's trending list, and accounts dedicated to his videos have also gained hundreds of followers overnight.
The video posted by the account was a subtitled compilation of the silliest questions Wang Lei has received during his live streams, as well as his respective (censored) responses.
Here's an example: A netizen had commented, “How many spots does the fish have?" to which Wang Lei replied, "Why don’t you count how many strands of hair you have down there, that’s the same number of spots [the fish has]."
Making an honest living
Wang Lei's sassy personality has clearly resonated with many netizens on Weibo and now they want more of him. One Weibo user wrote: "I’m going to die laughing. This is the funniest thing I’ve watched in my life". Another commented: "Which platform does he usually broadcast on? I want to personally experience this joy.”
What ensued was a lengthy discussion on how they would bypass the Facebook ban in China in order to catch Wang Lei’s live streams.
