Everything Fell Beautifully Into Place For Daniel Ong’s Super Fancy Wedding… But His Dog Died Two Days Later

When we texted former Mediacorp DJ Daniel Ong on Tuesday (Feb 4) to arrange for an interview about his recent wedding, one of the last things we expected was to be sent a photo of his dog, surrounded by flowers, in what would turn out to be a heartbreaking final send-off.

“My dog just died,” Dan wrote. “30 minutes ago.”

We immediately apologised, relayed our condolences, and assured him that we could speak to him another time after he has had some space to grieve, but Dan, ever the professional, offered to speak to us the very next afternoon.

Months after we visited the upper floor following reports of shuttered shops and sparse foot traffic, we returned on a Friday afternoon to see whether things had changed. This time, Level 2 had noticeably more people around, from teenagers and tourists to older shoppers. More importantly, shoppers were actually interacting with the stalls, trying things on and making purchases, rather than simply browsing and walking through. There are still plenty of shuttered units, and Level 2 remains much quieter than the ever-busy ground floor, but the atmosphere felt noticeably livelier during our visit. Bugis Street is also hosting its “Somewhere @ Bugis Street” weekend events as part of its ongoing efforts to bring more activity to the area.
