Would You Eat Off A Hawker Centre Table? Viral Video Divides Singaporeans

Singapore may be known for its cleanliness, but surely there are limits to how much faith we can place in public surfaces.

For most people, eating directly off a hawker centre table would probably be one of them.

Yet that’s exactly what a Redditor recently claimed to have witnessed.

In a post that quickly sparked reactions online, the Redditor shared a video showing a diner appearing to pick up strands of noodles directly from a hawker centre table using chopsticks. At one point, the noodles even slipped and fell back onto the tabletop before being picked up again and eaten.

Needless to say, the internet had questions.

It wasn’t entirely clear whether the diner had intentionally placed food on the table and was treating it like a plate, or was simply trying to rescue a few fallen noodles in the name of reducing food waste.

Either way, many viewers weren't convinced there was a good explanation.

The Redditor summed up the dilemma with a simple question: “Would you eat off a hawker table?”

The video itself also carried a caption asking: “Would you put your food on the table, like [you would] on a plate, even though you’ve already [cleaned] it?”

The answer from most netizens was a swift and emphatic no.

Some admitted that merely watching the clip made them feel “nauseous”, while others labelled the behaviour “disgusting”.

“That is so gross! The heck, who does this?” exclaimed one commenter.

Another wondered why the diner’s companions didn't intervene before things got to that point.

The incident was so baffling that a few users even joked that inflation must be hitting particularly hard if people had started treating hawker tables as dining plates.

The discussion soon expanded beyond the viral video itself.

Several netizens pointed out that they frequently see people placing cutlery directly onto hawker centre trays and tables, despite the surfaces being touched by countless people throughout the day.

Many argued that such surfaces are “never clean”, noting that cleaning cloths are often reused repeatedly across multiple tables.

Some even warned that consuming food directly from these surfaces could potentially increase the risk of foodborne illnesses.

As one particularly amused commenter put it: “I know Singapore is clean, but it’s not that clean.”

Fair point.

But the real question remains: would you eat food straight off a hawker centre table?

Um, extra seasoning?
