East Coast Terrace Neighbours Come Together For NDP Street Party With Road 'Closed' For Celebration

While many Singaporeans dressed in red and white and camped out at spots like Kallang Riverside Park and Tanjong Rhu Promenade for the NDP fireworks, others spent the long National Day weekend catching up with family and friends.

Over at East Coast Terrace, however, one community had its own special way of celebrating Singapore's 61st birthday.

Around 300 residents gathered in the estate, armed with mini Singapore flags and lights provided as door gifts, before settling into picnic chairs and mats for a chill evening together.

With National Day songs playing in the background, neighbours caught up, hung out and snacked away, turning the street into one big neighbourhood party.

Local influencer Lizy Teo was there to document the festivities, which included a buffet of local favourites, popcorn, candy floss and cold drinks.

According to Lizy, the road — it appears to be a cul-de-sac in a landed estate — was even specially closed for the celebration.

“Isn’t it crazy that they managed to close down the entire road just for today’s celebration?” she said.

Singer-songwriter and busker Jeff Ng also got the crowd singing along to familiar National Day tunes.

So who was behind the celebration?

The get-together, held last Friday and dubbed National Twilight, was organised by Singapore-based real estate developer Sevens Group.

It took place outside 'Cheng Residence' aka the East Coast Terrace home of Sevens Group CEO Eric Cheng, who opened up his house for the evening.

Led by Eric, the event aimed to bring neighbours, families, business partners and friends together while fostering the "kampung spirit" in the East Coast community.

And gather they did.

Families and friends could be seen mingling outside the Cheng Residence, enjoying the food, music and each other's company throughout the night.

This wasn't the first time Eric had opened his home for a massive community gathering either.

Earlier this year, he welcomed almost 500 guests and neighbours to Cheng Residence for a Chinese New Year celebration, with Minister Edwin Tong among those in attendance.

National Day may have been celebrated in countless ways across Singapore, but there's something especially heartwarming about an entire neighbourhood coming together for one big party.

And judging by the turnout, the folks at East Coast Terrace certainly know how to celebrate.
