Don’t Expect Desmond Ng To Sing Getai Songs As Frontman Of His New Band, AL4HA
They’re not your typical oppas in a K-pop band, and they’re okay with it.
We’re used to seeing Desmond Ng on the getai stage, when the 31-year-old singer snagged the title of Ge Tai Challenge in 2015, and having returned to the competition earlier this year as a host. But on this Sunday night, a different Desmond stands on a stage before us. There's not a gaudy getai backdrop or plastic red chair in sight. In fact, at X Music Entertainment Club, it's all a bit darker and sleeker.
Today, he’s taking the stage as lead vocalist of homegrown band AL4HA (say 'alpha'), which also comprises guitarist Simon Lai and drummer Joe Lee. Yes, we counted right. There's a '4' in the band name, despite having only three members. Who's this mysterious fourth member, we ask their management. "The number '4' holds a special significance as it represents the trio’s endless pursuit of their passion, perfection and excellence in music," they reply almost immediately. "The fourth member is also none other than their family, friends and fans who will be accompanying them in their music journey. This serves as a reminder to them that they are never alone in this journey with their companion." Hmm.
