Dennis Chew Thanks His “Bro” Romeo Tan For His “Chivalry” During Star Awards 2021

“The first name to be read out for the award was Romeo Tan. After he took his award and finished his award acceptance speech, he walked calmly to my side. After that, [overseas guest presenter] Ella [Chen], [Guo] Liang ge and [Quan] Yifeng continued reading out the names of the winners, without a single mention of my name. When it came to the seventh winner, Marcus [Chin]'s name was read out. At that moment, I was so nervous. I really wanted to be able to win my last award [so that I can ascend to the ranks of All-Time Favourite Artiste], but I still had to prepare myself for the possibility of losing. And while I was in the midst of grappling with that fact, the cameras would hone in on me every once in a while. But what you don’t know is that while all these were still happening, Romeo, who was standing the closest to me, was constantly reassuring me with his body language and gaze. With his eyes wide open, it seemed like he was constantly repeating the words: “Don't worry," Dennis continued on in his caption.

And then, Dennis' name was announced.

“(…) What touched me the most was [during] that very moment when Ella read out ‘Auntie Lucy’, and I raised both my hands up in a show of relief. I heard a voice that was more enthusiastic and overjoyed than anyone else. Romeo had stretched out his hands, [saying]: “Give me the microphone, give it to me quickly, give everything to me!”. The confusion [I felt] at that moment, and Romeo’s chivalry is etched in my mind. Why did he choose to do that[?] He could’ve chosen to stand at the side as per normal, but he chose to help me [instead]. And I’m short too, so Romeo, with his leading man stature, still had to bend over to grab my microphone and script. To me, that seemingly comical moment showcased his brotherly spirit.

Bro, thank you. We’re not the type of friends who’ll meet everyday, or go out often to eat and drink, but your actions that night really touched me. The entertainment industry in Singapore is small, but competition is still fierce, and unpredictable. However, Romeo has parted the dark clouds for me.” Dennis went on to write, thanking Romeo for giving him a helping hand and encouraging him through the entire presentation.

And we weren’t the only ones moved by Romeo’s actions. A number of celebs, including Jayley Woo, left comments both congratulating Dennis, and praising Romeo for his actions.

Romeo himself also left a comment on Dennis post, writing: “You’re too kind, it was just a small effort on my part. Congrats lah!”.
