Dennis Chew Designed His New HDB Maisonette Bedroom To Look Like Hotel Room ‘Cos He Misses Travelling; Rui En Says It’s "Very W Hotel"

This is the first time the 48-year-old star is living alone — or even having his own room.

We step out of the lift and are checking our phones for the unit number to Dennis Chew’s flat when we hear a familiar chortle. We walk towards it and true enough the first gate we see says Zhou Fu, or Chew’s Residence. “Welcome!” the Love 972 DJ says excitedly as he lets 8days.sg in.

When we enter, we are greeted by a one-metre tall Buzz Lightyear figure and spacious living room. To the right is a cosy dining area and kitchen, and the left, a glass display case which houses Dennis’ toy collectibles and trophies, followed by glass stairs that lead to the second floor of the apartment.

The 36-year-old resale Executive Maisonette flat, located in the northern part of Singapore, looks bigger than its 1,500 sq ft size, thanks to its open concept, minimalist design and predominantly white interior. To transform the place, Dennis “hacked all the walls that could be hacked” and replaced some of it with glass to allow natural light to fill the space. The result is a bright and warm space, with quirky touches and pops of bright colours.

“I wanted a minimalist concept so the place looks spacious, but I have a lot of things, so my interior designer built plenty of storage space for me to hide my things. All the [bench] seats double up as storage,” Dennis, 48, tells us.

You will not find a single armchair or couch in the house. Only bench seats that line the walls of each room.

“I don’t like sofas ‘cos they are very predictable. In fact, I didn’t even want bench seats, but I needed the storage space. It’s my dream to just throw a few colourful bean bags on the living room floor, but of course, that is not possible,” says Dennis. For extra storage, his ID also converted the space underneath the stairs into a shoe cabinet and storeroom, which Dennis calls his “Harry Potter room”.
