Chantalle Ng Wins Best Actress, Xu Bin Wins Best Actor, And Our Other Star Awards 2022 Predictions
Three showbiz super insiders give us their totally anonymous and totally unbiased predictions.

Gather round, gather round. The time has come once again for all of us to put on our thinking caps and gaze into the not-so distant future to discern just who will walk away with a shiny trophy come Sunday at the Star Awards.
Will fan favourite My Star Bride and its cast sweep all the awards? Or will we see an upset that will no doubt make Fang Cao and Ge Ge sad.
This year, it seems like our anonymous ‘fortune tellers’ each have their own favourites to champion, with no clear frontrunner. But that’s the beauty of the Star Awards, right? No one will really be able to know who the winners will be… until their names are read out on stage.
Want to know if your predictions hit the mark? Read on then, and don’t forget to catch Star Awards live on April 24.

Best Actor
Chen Hanwei - Recipe of Life
Desmond Tan - Key Witness
Jeremy Chan - Crouching Tiger Hidden Ghost
Romeo Tan - Soul Old Yet So Young
Xu Bin - My Star Bride
INDUSTRY INSIDER: "I hope for Jeremy Chan to win, but XU BIN is the likely winner. Jeremy’s performance might not be anything “surprising” since he’s known for his comedic chops, but his acting in the last few episodes, where he had to let Jesseca Liu’s character “go" was very powerful and emotional.
Xu Bin’s aloof lawyer character was very well-done, and he didn't overact. It’s a breakthrough for him the way he internalised the character’s emotions."
MEDIACORP ACTOR: "[My vote is for] JEREMY CHAN ‘cos Crouching Tiger Hidden Ghost is the only one that’s different, since it’s a comedy. It's hard to get nominated for a comedy, and he's been quietly following behind [the rest] for so many years. I hope he'll win with this performance."
INDUSTRY WATCHER: "I believe this is the year for ROMEO TAN to finally step into the spotlight after a decade or so after honing his acting chops in showbiz."
8DAYS' PICK! How long has it been since we've seen an onscreen romance captivate audiences the way Ge Ge and Fang Cao have? Surely credit has to go to XU BIN who had the emotional depth and the charm of a romantic leading man to make it completely convincing. All that's missing now is the Best Actor trophy.

Best Actress
Chantalle Ng - My Star Bride
Huang Biren - Recipe of Life
Jesseca Liu - Crouching Tiger Hidden Ghost
Joanne Peh - Mind Jumper
Ya Hui - CTRL
INDUSTRY INSIDER: "I hope Jesseca Liu wins but JOANNE PEH will walk home with the trophy this year. Jesseca taking on the lead role in a comedy really surprised me and she pulled it off well.
For Joanne, her character, who doesn’t show a lot of emotions, is very difficult to portray. However she did really well, especially in the scene where she has to tell her onscreen son about her cancer diagnosis."
MEDIACORP ACTOR: "For Best Actress, the competition is much tougher than Best Actor 'cos Huang Biren and Joanne Peh are both really really strong. But I'll vote for CHANTALLE NG. She acted very well in My Star Bride and if she wins, it would be an inspiration for the younger ones.
INDUSTRY WATCHER: "CHANTALLE NG. When fans address you by your character's name 'Fang Cao' rather than your real one, you know you have created an iconic TV character. Winning the award would be the perfect industry endorsement for this young star in launching her showbiz career into the stratosphere."
8DAYS' PICK! What a year is has been for CHANTALLE NG, whose process getting into character as Fang Cao is so well-documented, it's now the stuff of legend. Has there been a role more talked about or an actress whose star has shone so bright so fast in recent years? Don't think so and for that she deserves the win.

Best Supporting Actor
Chew Chor Meng - The Heartland Hero
James Seah - Key Witness
Jeffrey Xu - The Takedown
Zhang Zetong - Key Witness
Zhu Houren - My Star Bride
INDUSTRY INSIDER: "It’s definitely JEFFREY XU. I was very impressed with his acting in The Takedown. He had a lot of scenes where he manages to move the audience with his gaze alone."
MEDIACORP ACTOR: "I'll vote for JEFFREY XU 'cos the role he took on this time is a little different from the ones he usually does, it's more poignant. I hope to give him some encouragement."
INDUSTRY WATCHER: "JAMES SEAH is a prolific actor with a number of memorable characters under his belt in recent year. He was able to hold his own in Key Witness against the other actors and give viewers a taste of what we can expect from him in the years to come."
8DAYS' PICK! CHEW CHOR MENG is in a class (3?) of his own with his performance as a disgruntled, penny-pinching driving instructor. Every grimace, every exasperated sigh is imbued with so much weight, you feel like he's directing it at you.

Best Supporting Actress
Bonnie Loo - Key Witness
Cynthia Koh - My Star Bride
Lin Meijiao - My Star Bride
Lina Ng - Key Witness
Rui En - The Heartland Hero
INDUSTRY INSIDER: "CYNTHIA KOH's character in the show is really irritating and loud, but that one scene where she broke down over her insecurities about her inability to bear a child, as well as the scene where she confronted her husband over his ‘mistress’ — those were really powerful. It reminded me once again how good an actress Cynthia is."
MEDIACORP ACTOR: "All five are very strong, let’s see who hasn’t gotten this award before… (trails off). I think it should be LIN MEIJIAO [who will win]."
INDUSTRY WATCHER: "If Chantalle is able to soar with her Vietnamese bride character, her real-life mum LIN MEIJIAO would undeniably be the wind beneath her wings. Her mere presence always seems to elevate the performances of the others."
8DAYS' PICK! If My Star Bride is a fairy tale for the ages, then LIN MEIJIAO, who was terrific as a disapproving mother-in-law, winning Best Supporting Actress when her daughter picks up Best Actress is the happy ending we want for Star Awards 2022.

Best Drama Serial
Crouching Tiger Hidden Ghost
Mind Jumper
My Star Bride
Soul Old Yet So Young
The Takedown
INDUSTRY INSIDER: "MY STAR BRIDE will win. Firstly, there’s a reason everyone loves the show. And it is actually a very good drama. Everyone acted very well, and every element and character is well-written, with their own backstories and character arcs. People can relate to the family drama, and the romance is realistic and done very nicely."
MEDIACORP ACTOR: "Every drama is very different, Mind Jumper, The Takedown... I quite like both of them. [But] I think MY STAR BRIDE handled the family drama theme and the arrival of a new bride very well, so I think it will win."
INDUSTRY WATCHER: "CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN GHOST. This fun ensemble dramedy is the perfect medicine to chase the pandemic blues away. The leads look like they had fun sparring with their fellow actors in this supernatural tale with a message of fulfilment and destiny."
8DAYS' PICK! We're pretty sure if MY STAR BRIDE doesn't win there's going to be a huge uproar.

Best Programme Host (Entertainment & Infotainment)
Desmond Ng - Curious City
Guo Liang - The Inner Circle
Ke Le - Curious City
Kym Ng - Old Taste Detective S2
Quan Yifeng - Hear U Out S2
INDUSTRY INSIDER: "Quan Yifeng, who won last year for Hear U Out, is essentially doing the same thing. On the other hand, you can see a comical side of GUO LIANG in The Inner Circle and it's a breakthrough of sorts for him. If you have no substance, then you don’t have it. Guo Liang has it and you can see it.
MEDIACORP ACTOR: "I hope to see a new face [win], but Guo Liang and QUAN YIFENG are really too strong. I think it'll be Yifeng, 'cos in the second season [of Hear U Out], she didn't just take on the role of a host, she immersed herself in the guest's situation and emotions, to understand and communicate with them."
INDUSTRY WATCHER: "You can really see KE LE's bubbly persona shining through in this series. Viewers can see that she puts in effort in every episode. Winning an award would give much needed motivation for her in the long road ahead."
8DAYS' PICK! Sure QUAN YIFENG is the obvious pick but Hear U Out's second season was a runaway success and much of it is because of Yifeng's skill as an interviewer.
