Cassandra See’s Son Is Now 19, Super Cute And Obsessed With The Marines

“You sure you were born at that time meh?” she laughs. “Just like that young man I’m filming with today — I’m pretty sure he has no idea who I am!”

The young man she's talking about is Star Search 2019 Top 24 candidate Lee Wennhon, whom she's been paired up with for his debut acting clip for the competition. Other Star Search alums involved with the project are stars like Vincent Ng, Chew Chor Meng, Jeffrey Xu, Sora Ma, Romeo Tan, Rayson Tan and Ya Hui.

Being in front of the camera is like being at home for Cassandra, who was a mainstay on Ch 8 in the '90s before bowing out of acting in 2000 when she got married. Cassandra and her German ex-husband — they split up in 2003 — have a son Lukas, who is now 19, together.

For the past 10 years, she's been happily married to a Korean man, who she says is in the hospitality industry, and the couple have been busy travelling the world. "He's a VP, so we get treated very nicely wherever we go. Even better, right?" says Cassandra.

So is that why she hasn't made her showbiz comeback?

“Aiyah, you know Korean men. They’re a bit MCP,” she quips. “He keeps telling me that I shouldn’t work. So I told him okay, that means he can’t retire and has to keep on working so he can continue to bring me as his plus one while he travels the world for work!”

Even then, she’s more than happy to take on acting projects that don’t require long-term commitment. “Acting is something that I’ve grown to love, and I love it so much. If you asked me if I wanted to be an actress when I was younger, I would say, no, definitely not! I don’t believe in aiming for unattainable goals. I wanted to be a policewoman, but I guess fate wasn’t going to let that happen,” Cassandra recalls fondly.

Her story about how she got started in showbiz is quite the serendipitous one — her friend had signed her up to be an extra on a drama and she was later encouraged to join Star Search by the crew. She took the plunge and the rest, as they say, is history.

Both Cassandra and her husband will turn 50 next year, which leads us to ask her if she has any retirement plans in mind.

She pauses to think for a moment before responding: “To be honest, I think Singapore will always be my home. I was based in Hong Kong and Japan for about seven years combined, and I was always so happy to be home. I told my husband every day, ‘I hope you get posted back to Singapore’ and by a stroke of fate, it really happened, which is how I came back home.”

That being said, is there anything she hopes to accomplish?

“I want to open an Airbnb in Tuscany,” she grins. “I love the place so much. My husband does too — he loves the wine and food while I love the nature and people there. Both of us have gone there so many times and we’re always happy to return. If we had to retire somewhere, I’d want us to go there.”

Though she had told us earlier that she doesn't want to talk much about her son Lukas, we decide to ask if he would move with her to Tuscany if she decides to retire there.

Cassandra then rolls her eyes before heaving an exasperated sigh.

“This boy ah. I tell you, he’ll never go with us. He’s currently obsessed with the Marines. I don’t know why or how, but he really loves them. The only place he’d consider moving to is the US, and it’s all because he wants to be closer to the Marines,” she says in all seriousness.

We wait for her to tell us that she's joking but she doesn't.

“Is it a coming of age thing?" she continues. "Is it because he feels that putting on that uniform gives you an extra sense of responsibility? I also don’t know why he likes them so much, but I mean, he’s an adult and I’ll let him make his own decisions. Even if we do move somewhere far away, we’ll always be a phone call or flight away.”
