We have all been there. Feeling heavy and bloated, we decide it is time for a diet.
But wait, has anyone heard about a water fast?
In an IG story, Mediacorp actor Benjamin Tan posted a selfie seemingly in discomfort and wrote, “Started on my 3-day water fasting… I’m dying here. Help! I want my food”.
Did something happen that made the 32-year-old decide to make such a radical move?
In an interview with 8days.sg via WhatsApp, Benjamin says this is his first time trying a water fast after seeing videos online of people trying it.
He also consulted his doctor friends before embarking on it.
“Time sure feels like it’s passing very slowly,” Benjamin laughs, later telling us that he is currently on the second day.
He also says that despite gaining 3kg during a work trip to Kuala Lumpur, water fasting is not just about losing weight for him.
“It is more of a detox for the body to reset itself,” the actor explained. "Apparently, water fasting helps to improve not only digestion, but also enhance cellular repair and replace the old cells in our body”.
Despite those claims, critics have come out to say that it is an unhealthy way to lose weight and even create problems such as electrolyte imbalances.
Though Benjamin doesn’t count it as a negative side effect, he revealed that he felt different from the first day onwards.
“The body enters a mode where it doesn't receive any form of food, you start to be a lot more restless, moody and borderline lethargic,” he said.
“It also feels like I would really need to control myself when I break this cycle of water fasting, because binging on food after breaking fast, apparently, will not be good for the body as well,” Benjamin added.
Well, day three is almost here, right?
According to sources, people who have health issues such as gout, kidney disease, and eating disorders are advised not to do a water fast.
However, Benjamin says he isn’t deterred by the negativity.
“This has been quite an interesting experience, and I would continue to implement this into my routine, as and when it is suitable,” he says.
