Oscars 2022: Will Smith Punches Chris Rock Over Joke About Jada Pinkett Smith
The Oscars took a surreal turn when Will Smith walked on stage and punched Chris Rock after the latter made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.
Will Smith punched Chris Rock in the face on stage at the Oscars.
The 57-year-old comedian was on stage at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre to present the Best Documentary Feature prize on Sunday (Mar 27) when he mocked some of the famous faces in the crowd, and the King Richard actor took offense when Rock poked fun at his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaven-headed look.
Pinkett Smith revealed she has alopecia — a condition that causes bald spots and hair loss — in 2018.
Rock said: "Jada, love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it.'"
Although Smith laughed at first, Pinkett looked unimpressed and Smith then walked to the stage, punched the presenter and walked away again.
Rock said: "Oh Wow. Will Smith just smacked the s***t out of me."
Smith then shouted from his seat: "Take my wife's name out of your f****** mouth."
Rock said: "Wow dude. It was a G.I. Jane joke."
The Men in Black actor then again said: "Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth."
Rock appeared stunned as he said: "I'm going to okay... I'll keep going? That was, er, the greatest night in the history of television. Okay.
"So we are here to give a documentary out, to give an Oscar for Best Documentary.
"Now the beauty of documentaries, they make you feel smart, like you read a book or something but all you really did was get high and watch Netflix. So here we go, the nominees are..."
Summer of Soul was then announced as the winner of the category.
