It’s every journo’s worst nightmare: you pay the interviewee a compliment (or you thought was a compliment), but only to have the other party tear you a new one. Yikes.

And that happened to a poor Russian journalist who got on the wrong side of Ridley Scott during The Last Duel press tour.

In a viral clip from the video interview (which is part of a larger Russian video), the journalist described Scott’s Matt Damon-Adam Driver-starring 14th century-era set dram as “more realistic” than the British director’s earlier period pieces, 2005’s Kingdom of Heaven and 2010’s Robin Hood.

“It’s a very realistic film. It looks like realistic than Kingdom of Heaven or Robin Hood if you’re talking about…”, the interviewer innocuously quipped before a masked-up Scott (who was joined by actress Jodie Comer) cut him off, saying, “Sir, f*** you. F*** you. Thank you very much. F*** you. Go f*** yourself, sir. Go on.”

Why did the comment tick off Scott? Maybe the 84-year-old filmmaker didn’t appreciate the backhanded compliment. Maybe there was more to the interview than just the 13-sec footage that was uploaded. Maybe this was an inside joke between them. (You know how some folks use ‘F*** you’ as a term of endearment.) Who knows?

This is the latest interview where Scott appeared to have lost his cool. Last month, while speaking to Deadline, he slammed the superhero genre as “f***king boring as s***” and during a chat on Marc Marcon’s WTF podcast, he blamed the abysmal theatrical performance of The Last Duel on millennials and their mobile phones.

More recently, Scott hit back at the Gucci family’s scathing response to the House of Gucci actors, notably the casting of Al Pacino and Adam Driver as Aldo and Paolo Gucci, respectively.

He told Total Film, “The people that were writing from the family to us at the onset were alarmingly insulting, saying that Al Pacino did not represent physically Aldo Gucci in any shape or form. And yet, frankly, how could they be better represented than by Al Pacino? Excuse me! You probably have the best actors in the world, you should be so f***king lucky.”

The Last Duel will launch on Disney+ on Jan 5 while House of Gucci opens in Singapore cinemas on Dec 30.
