Steven Spielberg Not Directing Indiana Jones 5

Hold on to your potatoes because Steven Spielberg has dropped out as director of Indiana Jones 5.

According to Variety, Spielberg is relinquishing directing reins on the yet-to-be titled Indiana Jones sequel, with Ford v Ferrari director James Mangold in talks to succeed him. (So Mangold is going from Indy 5000 to Indy 5? Geddit…oh, never mind.)

For fans, this marks the end of an era: It’s the first time in the franchise’s 39-year history that Spielberg — who created the series with the now-retired George Lucas — isn’t at the helm. But Spielberg, 73, will stay on as producer. He’s currently in post-production on his new version of West Side Story.

Harrison Ford, who’ll be again playing the whip-cracking expert on the occult and obtainer of rare antiquities, has previously told CBS Morning Show while promoting The Call of the Wild that the sequel will start shooting in “about two months”.

But days later, Ford backtracked, saying the project is still ironing out “scheduling issues and a few script things” and that “we’re determined to get it right before we get it made”. He added, “I don’t really want to give [audiences] what they wanna see, I want to give them something they didn’t anticipate seeing.”

With this latest behind-the-scenes development, it’s unclear if Indiana Jones 5 will be able to meet its July 9, 2021 release. And what if Mangold is a no-go, who else will Lucasfilm seek out to shepherd the movie? Will they knock on JJ Abrams’ door again?

West Side Story opens in cinemas Dec 17; Ford v Ferrari is now out on iTunes and Singtel TV VOD.
