Steven Spielberg has seen Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny — and he, ahem, digs it.

The upcoming fifth movie of the adventure franchise is the first instalment not to be directed by Spielberg himself; the reins were handed over to Logan and Ford v Ferrari helmer James Mangold. Spielberg remains onboard as executive producer, as does series co-creator George Lucas.

When asked at the Time 100 Summit what it feels to watch an Indiana Jones movie not directed by him, Spielberg said, “I just had that experience two nights ago.”

He added, “[Disney CEO] Bob Iger had a screening for a lot of the Disney executives, and I came to the screening along with the director James Mangold. Everybody loved the movie. It’s really, really a good Indiana Jones film. I’m really proud of what Jim has done with it.”

The Oscar-feted filmmaker continued, “When the lights came up, I just turned to the group and said, ‘Damn! I thought I was the only one who knew how to make one of these.”

Spielberg is no stranger to stepping away from directing sequels to his own movies.

Jeannot Azwarc took over directorial duties for 1978’s Jaws 2 because Spielberg was traumatised by the under-the-gun conditions of how the first Jaws was made. Plus, in many interviews, he said he has already made “the definitive shark movie”.

After directing Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Spielberg handed the baton to Joe Johnston for 2001’s Jurassic Park III. In a Chicago Tribune interview, Spielberg said he passed on the threequel because making a Jurassic Park movie was a massive logistical challenge, an endeavour he wasn’t keen to go through again.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set in the 1960s, with the retired fedora-wearing archaeologist, expert on the occult and obtainer of rare antiquities lured back to the field by his goddaughter Helena (series newbie Phoebe Waller-Bridge) to recover an ancient artifact the Nazis (led by Mads Mikkelsen) once coveted.

Ford said in Total Film the movie will mark his final outing as Jones and will not be involved in the reported Indiana Jones Disney+ series currently in development.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18. The festival will also pay a special tribute to Ford. It will be out in Singapore cinemas on June 29.
