Netflix's Korean dystopian smash Squid Game is up for three gongs at next month's Golden Globe Awards, including Best TV Series - Drama and Best Actor for Lee Jung-Jae.

Nominations for the 79th Golden Globe Awards were announced on Monday (Dec 13) morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Helen Hoehne and rapper Snoop Dogg, from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

Kenneth Branagh's autobiographical film Belfast and the Benedict Cumberbatch-led Western The Power of Dog lead the awards with seven prizes each — including Best Motion Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

Branagh has two nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay with stars such as Jamie Dornan also recognised.

Director Jane Campion will go up against Branagh for her film The Power of the Dog with Benedict and co-star Kirsten Dunst nominated for acting prizes for their performances.

Other stars to be nominated for acting awards include Will Smith for King Richard, Kristen Stewart for Spencer and Lady Gaga for House of Gucci.

Olivia Colman, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Andrew Garfield and Denzel Washington are also in the running for gongs.

HBO's corporate/family drama Succession leads the TV nominations with five while Apple TV+'s The Morning Show and Ted Lasso both have four each. Squid Game is vying in three categories: Best TV Series — Drama, Best Actor (Lee Jung-Jae) and Best Supporting Actor Oh Yeong-Su.

The ceremony will take place on January 9, 2022, but will not be televised after TV network NBC dropped it after a series of revelations that included a lack of diversity and ethical conflicts among its voters.
