Squid Game Makes History As First Non-English Best Drama Nominee At 2022 Emmys, Scores 14 Nominations Including 4 For Acting

Netflix's Korean hit Squid Game has made history by becoming the first non-English language show to be nominated for Best Drama Series at the 74th edition of the Emmy Awards.

The most-watched Netflix series of all-time secured a whopping 14 nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Lee Jung-Jae, Outstanding Supporting Actor for Park Hae-Soo and Oh Yeong-Su, and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Jung Ho-Yeon.

"I feel so happy and honored that Squid Game became the first non-English language series to be nominated for the Emmy Awards," said creator/showrunner/writer/director Hwang Dong-Hyuk in a statement. "I hope that Squid Game's Emmy nominations will open up even more opportunities for the whole world to enjoy and appreciate each other's content beyond the barriers of culture and language."

HBO's family business drama Succession leads the Emmys with the most nods of 25.  Brian Cox, who plays the patriarch of the media dynasty, Logan Roy, and his on-screen son Jeremy Strong are both up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Elsewhere, Nicholas Braun, Matthew MacFadyen and Kieran Culkin are all up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Sarah Snook and J. Smith Cameron are both up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

The Apple+ sitcom Ted Lasso and The White Lotus, another HBO production, both trail behind with 20 nominations. HBO Max's Hacks and Hulu's Only Murders in the Building both scored 17 nominations each.

High school comedy Abbot Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson also made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for three Emmys — Outstanding Lead Actress, Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Comedy Series (Brunson is also an executive producer).
