You’ll never look at a smile the same way after…. Smile.
In Smile, now in cinemas, the eponymous facial expression is anything but friendly — it’s a conduit for a malignant paranormal force that takes over people and compels them to perform heinous deeds while grinning ear to ear.
Sosie Bacon — best known for her roles on HBO’s Emmy-winning Kate Winslet series Mare of Easttown and the controversial teen drama 13 Reasons Why — stars as Dr Rosie Cotton, a psychiatrist (with a traumatic past) terrorised by this smiley sinister entity. Problem is, the people around Rosie — including her fiancé (Independence Day: Resurgence’s Jessie T Usher) and a cop (Scream’s Kyle Gallner) — think she’s lost her marbles.
Dripping unease and oozing dread, Smile marks the feature debut of Parker Finn who based the movie on an award-winning short he made in 2020 called Laura Hasn’t Slept. (Caitlin Stasey, the star of that 11-minute short has a memorable role in Smile.)
“I wanted to make a movie that felt like a sustained panic attack from start to finish,” said Finn of his mission statement in the production notes. And judging from the reviews, he’s pretty successful at that: Smile scored 77 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Smile has something else to smile about: It spawned a viral marketing campaign that involved performers photobombing baseball games and TV shows.
In a video interview with 8days.sg, the cast and director of Smile let us in on who among the ensemble has the creepiest smile. We also Bacon if her father, Kevin Bacon — who’s no stranger to horror (Stirs of Echoes, Hollow Man) — gave any advice on making scary movies.
Smile (M18) is now in cinemas. Watch our interview with the cast and director below:
