Following A Quiet Place Part II’s deafening USS$58 million (S$76 mil) US opening weekend, the makers of the creature-feature franchise have quickly dated the third instalment for Mar 31, 2023, reports say.

For the new entry, John Krasinki will hand directorial reins over to Jeff Nichols, who’s best known for the 2011 Michael Shannon-starring sci-fi drama Take Shelter, for which won him the Cannes Critics Week prize, and the 2016 sci-fi thriller Midnight Special.

No word on the cast but Krasinski told Rotten Tomatoes’ Erik Davis that the follow-up is more of a spin-off than a threequel that will expand the post-apocalyptic world established in the first two movies where humanity is threatened by sound-sensitive monsters.

Elsewhere, Disney has shared that it's developing the sequel to Cruella, the live-action prequel to its 1961 animated feature 101 Dalmatians, with director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara.

Cruella, starring Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil, opened in the US in the same week as A Quiet Place Part II, and came in second with US$26.5 mil and on Disney+ via an extra US$30 through its Premier Access option.

Gillespie recently told Collider that there are more stories to be told about the eponymous villain. “I feel like we’ve only just met her,” said he. “I’d love to now see the full-blown Cruella, fully loaded. She’s managed to get the support system around her and she can really expand on her brand.”

He added, “I’d love to see where that takes her and how you could almost destroy her from inside out, if she’s not careful with all that power.”

A Quiet Place Part II opens in Singapore cinemas on June 17 but has already begun its sneaks starting today (Jun 5). Cruella debut on May 27 in cinemas and a day later on Disney+ Premier Access (with a S$38.98 rental fee); it came in No.1 at the box-office over the weekend.
