Rick Moranis Makes First On-Screen Appearance In 23 Years — In Cell Phone Ad With Ryan Reynolds

It’s been a while since we’ve last seen Rick Moranis. The Canadian actor is best known for playing the bespectacled nerdy hero in a string of ’80s and ’90s movies (Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids); his last on-screen appearance was in 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves!

In February, Disney announced that that Moranis, now 67, will reprise his scientist role of Wayne Szalinski for a reboot of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Alas, that Disney+ project is still in pre-production. Good news is, we don't have to wait too long to see Moranis again.

On Wednesday (Sept 9), Moranis turned up in a new commercial alongside Ryan Reynolds for Mint Mobile, the low-cost mobile carrier of which Reynolds is an owner.

Moranis (seen here with Stuart Pankin) in 1997’s ‘Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves!’. He took a break from acting after his wife, Ann, died from breast cancer in 1997 to focus on raising his two young children. During the period, he only took on voice work and comedy albums.

In the 42-sec ad, Moranis asks Reynolds why he’s there and a clearly star-struck Reynolds says, “I’m a huge fan.” “That’s it?” Moranis responds. “That’s it,” Reynolds replies. Moranis then walks away.

It’s a simple cameo but we’re pretty certain Moranis is adequately compensated for his trouble. Meanwhile, Reynolds' new movie, Free Guy, opens in cinemas Dec 10.
