Here we go again.

It looks like Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s US$200 million (S$280 mil) tentpole that Warner Bros is pinning hopes on to jumpstart the comatose box-office and rekindle the movie-going experience, will not be released on July 17 as originally slated. Its US release has been pushed back by two weeks to July 31.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also forced the studio to postpone Wonder Woman 1984 (from Aug 14 to Oct 2); Godzilla vs Kong (from Nov 20 to May 21, 2021), Tom & Jerry (from Dec 23 to Mar 5, 2021), and Matrix 4 (from May 21, 2021 to Apr 1, 2022). Robert Zemeckis’ The Witches, due Oct 9, is pulled from the schedule.

In Singapore, Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984 are now skedded to open on July 30 and Oct 1, respectively. Tenet’s delay means Disney’s Mulan will be the first major studio movie to welcome audiences back to the cinemas when it premieres on July 24 (July 23 in Singapore).

Here, cinemas have been shuttered since Mar 27. But going by the government’s three-phased reopening strategy, will they be reopened by July 23? And when exhibitors resume business, there’s the more pressing question of how keen audiences are to return to the cinemas.
