Let’s face it, the Guardians won’t be the same without Mantis.

Warning: This story contains some spoilers of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks the end of the era for the A-hole misfit warriors.

For starters, it’s the final Marvel Cinematic Universe gig for James Gunn, who helmed the three Guardians movies as well as the Disney+ holiday special. Once he’s done promoting Vol. 3, he’s wearing his CEO and Chairman hats to run DC Studios where he’s building a sprawling cross-platform empire to rival the one his former employer has.

Zoe Saldaña and Dave Bautista have publicly stated that they’re through with portraying Gamora and Drax, respectively, while Chris Pratt seems to be ambivalent about reprising Star-Lord in future adventures (“It would be strange to continue [Star-Lord’s] story without James,” he told Total Film).

And if the mid-credits stinger is any indication, Rocket and Groot will return. (Then again, they are CG characters anyway: you don’t always replace Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as voice actors. Just saying.)

And that leaves us Pom Klementieff, the French actress who portrays the empath Mantis. By the end of Vol. 3, it doesn’t look like she'll be joining the new Guardians line-up for another world-saving tour.

Introduced in 2017’s Vol. 2, Mantis was a wonderful addition to the team; in her, Drax, especially, found the perfect sparring partner. Drax, with his dry and deadpan delivery, and Mantis, her innocence and naivety and occasional passive-aggressive outbursts (“Get over the zarg nuts!”), make them an endearing double-act.  (Klementieff will ditch her cuddly side to play a sociopath in July’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.)

When 8days.sg last spoke to Klementieff for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, she warned us about how emotional Vol.3 is going to be. And she wasn’t kidding. If it was tough on the audience, it was even tougher for her to bid farewell to the gang.

During the Vol. 3 press con, Klementieff recalled a moment when she broke down in tears while on a flight with Gunn, Pratt, and Karen Gillan (Nebula).

"We are on the plane. You know Chris, Chris is a clumsy oaf, okay?" Gunn said. “He comes in. We're taking off. He has a coffee — there's a cup holder right there. He doesn't put his coffee in the cup holder. He puts it on the armrest.”

And guess what? Pratt spilled the coffee on Klementieff's  “very expensive” and “very unique” designer purse which Gunn & Co. had been “complimenting for a week”.

Then Klementieff “bursts into tears” all of a sudden.

No, she didn’t cry over the spillage on her pricey accessory. “I feel like something is ending,” explained Klementieff. “I wanted to hide in the bathroom and cry because it’s like mourning. Sometimes, it just hits at unexpected moments and you can’t control it.”

But whatever happened to the purse? Seriously, curious minds want to know.

That, and what other Marvel characters she would love to have a crack at. (Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, Patton Oswalt and Linda Cardellini are some of the actors who’ve played multiple roles in the MCU.) Check out our interview with Klementieff:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 (PG13) is now in cinemas. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One opens on July 13.
