It looks like the Mortal Kombat sequel has found its director.

Simon McQuoid, the Australian director behind the 2021 action-fantasy — an adaptation of the popular video game series set around a high-stakes supernatural MMA tournament where the fate of the world is on the line — is returning to helm another round of bone-shattering, spine-shredding mayhem, Deadline reported.

Mortal Kombat marked the feature directorial debut of McQuoid, a trained graphic designer-turned-ad-maker from Perth and starred Lewis Tan, Joe Taslim, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asan and Chin Han.

The movie was panned by critics (54 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes) but grossed a respectable US$85 million (S$76 mil) worldwide on a reported US$55 million budget.

Released in April 2021, Mortal Kombat was one of the first to gauge the interests of audiences as cinemas reopened following the pandemic and the results came as a surprise to many.

The follow-up was first greenlit in January, with Moon Knight scribe Jeremy Slater hired to pen the script.

McQuoid previously banned any talk of a sequel on the set of the first film. He told Variety last year: "None of us used the S-word. We’d never talk about it in any depth whatsoever because we feel like we have to put all our energy into this film.

"That being said, if the fans want another one, that’s not for us to decide; that’s for the fans to decide.
"Then, we need a couple of joiner pieces that we know can lead us somewhere because there’s a treasure trove of stuff that’s just sitting there."

Chin Han, who portrayed evil sorcerer Shang Tsung, took to Instagram to share news of McQuoid's return. "The prophecy is upon us," he wrote.

At the time of writing, it's not known whether Chin Han and the other core cast members (whose characters survived the first movie, that is) will reprise their roles in the sequel. Watch this space!
