The Johnny Depp-free, Margot Robbie-led Pirates of the Caribbean was first announced in 2020.

Margot Robbie's Female-Led Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie Scrapped: "I Guess They Don't Want To Do It"

Margot Robbie's female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean film is dead in the water.

The Bombshell actress broke the news in the latest issue of Vanity Fair.

She said, "We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it."

The female-led Pirates chapter was first revealed in June 2020 that Robbie was set to reunite with her Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson on the project. It was one of two Pirates movies being developed by Disney; the other was a second reboot written by franchise veteran Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced all five Pirates movies, starring Johnny Depp, was attached to both projects at the time.

In May, Bruckheimer gave The Sunday Times an update, saying that the studio was still moving forward with the projects.

“Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without," said Bruckheimer.

When asked if Depp would ever return to the franchise, the uber-producer said, "Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.”

Robbie has wrapped Barbie, which will roll out globally in July. Her next film, the Oscar-baiting Babylon, from La La Land director Damien Chazelle, slated to open in Singapore cinemas on Jan 26.
