Laurence Fishburne has seen The Matrix Resurrections — and has mixed feelings about it.

Fishburne played Morpheus in 1999’s The Matrix and its sequels, 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, but did return alongside original cast members Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Ann Moss (Trinity) for last year’s The Matrix Resurrections. In the latter, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stepped into the shoes of the AI version of a younger Morpheus.

Speaking to Variety at the premiere of Fishburne’s new film, Netflix’s The School for Good and Evil, the Hannibal alum said, “It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. And it wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be.”

He added, “But I thought Carrie-Anne and Keanu really did their thing. Yeah, that’s what I thought.”

Did Fishburne miss not being part of the revival? “No, not really," he replied.

While Fishburne missed out on reuniting with Reeves in Matrix 4, they will be together in John Wick: Chapter 4. Fishburne first played Bowery King, the leader of a network of vagabond assassins, in 2017’s John Wick: Chapter 2 and again in 2019’s follow-up, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.

When asked how is No.4 different from the rest, Fishburne said, “Honestly, when I read it, this is the best one. From the way it opens, there were like three or four really incredible set-pieces that were just like, ‘Whoa!’. There’s new characters, one, in particular, is so much fun. Well, actually three, that are crazy fun. And you know, I got to be in it again.”
