Jordan Peele Rejects Fan’s “Best Horror Director of All Time” Praise, Says He Won’t Tolerate “John Carpenter Slander”

Jordan Peele doesn't believe the three films he's made so far are enough to qualify him for the title of best horror director.

Jordan Peele Rejects Fan’s “Best Horror Director of All Time” Praise, Says He Won’t Tolerate “John Carpenter Slander”

Jordan Peele may have made a name for himself as a horror filmmaker — and even won an Oscar — but he has a long way to be called "the best horror director of all time".

To date, Peele, 43, has only three films under his directorial belt — 2017's Get Out, 2019's Us, and his latest, Nope, opening in the US on Friday and on Aug 18 in Singapore. (Don't ask me why the long wait — I just work here.)

Get Out and Us were both commercial and critical hits, while the UFO-themed Nope has yet to be released, it's generally well-received by reviewers (82 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes) and is expected to rule the weekend box-office.

But when comic book creator Adam Ellis championed Peele "as the best horror director of all time", Peele felt he didn't deserve the honour.

"I know this is a hot take but at what point do we declare Jordan Peele the best horror director of all time?," Ellis tweeted. "Can you think of another horror director that had 3 great films, let alone 3 in a row? I can’t.”

To which Peele replied, "Sir, please put the phone down I beg you. Sorry. I love your enthusiasm but I will just not tolerate any John Carpenter slander!”

John Carpenter's legendary body of work includes 1978's Halloween, 1982's The Thing, 1987's Prince of Darkness, and 1994's In the Mouth of Madness. (Between these scare-fests, Carpenter would put out an oddity or two like 1981's Escape from New York, 1984's Star Man, and 1986's Big Trouble in Little China — the man is pretty versatile.)

While Carpenter is Peele's G.O.A.T. pick, other Twitter users responding to Ellis' tweet suggested Wes Craven, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Brian De Palma, and David Cronenberg as possible candidates

Nope opens in Singapore cinemas on Aug 18.
