Did Henry Cavill Just Lose His Job As Superman?

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn is writing a new Superman movie — but it won’t involve Henry Cavill.
Did Henry Cavill Just Lose His Job As Superman?

It looks like Henry Cavill is no longer playing Superman.

In October, Cavill — following his cameo in Black Adam went Instagram official that he would be donning the red-and-blue spandex again. “I am back as Superman and the image you see in this post and what you saw in Black Adam are a very small taste of what’s to come,” he wrote then.

Sadly, his return was short-lived.

On Wednesday (Dec 14), DC Studios co-head James Gunn tweeted that while a new Superman is in the works, it will not involve Cavill.

“[Co-label chief] Peter [Safran] & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year,” Gunn tweeted.

“Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill,” he added. “But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Cavill confirmed the news of his departure in a statement released via Instagram. “It’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” he wrote. “After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. I respect that James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

Guess all that hard work Dwayne Johnson put in to get Cavill in Black Adam didn't pay off.

Variety reported that Gunn has been working on the Superman story for a while. The story is said to focus on the character’s life as a cub reporter in Metropolis, where he will cross paths with the likes of Lois Lane. (So it’s like Gotham?)

Last week, Warner Bros revealed a host of changes to the DC movies — including the axing of the third Wonder Woman instalment with director Patty Jenkins — which saw Gunn fielding queries on Twitter. One fan asked if the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer “does not like Henry Cavill” (he replied, “Sure: false”) and whether the latter would reprise Superman amid the reshuffling (which, as of today, turns out to be true).

On the DC movies’ future, Gunn wrote: “We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.

“As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait. We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer.”

Expect more news on the reimagined DC Universe under the Gunn/Safran regime to be announced in January.
