Hayden Christensen Reveals Which Is More Challenging To Do In The Darth Vader Suit — The Lightsabre Fights Or The Toilet Breaks?

It’s been a while since Hayden Christensen walked on the Dark Side.

The last time Christensen donned the armour costume of Darth Vader — the moniker adopted by fallen Jedi knight Anakin Skywalker after switching sides — was nearly 17 years ago in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Yes, it’s been that long.

And when Christensen received the call that he’d be reprising the role of the Sith Lord with the asthmatic wheeze for the Disney+ limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi, he had to not only get back into lightsabre-duelling shape but also relearn Vader’s intimidating mannerisms.

He couldn’t just rely on muscle memory, so he sought out the services of a Vader Movement Specialist…a what?

Christensen, 41, told Entertainment Weekly: “We had this woman who was like a Vader movement specialist, And she made sure that we were always in the right ballpark.”

With choreographer JoAnn Jansen’s help, they were able to “[stay] true to how Vader moves and how we perceive him, and wanting to keep all that relatively consistent,” Christensen added.

But moving around in Vader’s attire —  including his iconic kabuto-inspired helmet and a cooling unit in his underwear to keep him, well, cool — was no walk in the park.

"I remember when we were doing Episode III and I put on the suit for the first time, I was really having a tough time moving around in it, and it was all extremely rigid,” Christensen recalled. “And I said that to George [Lucas], and he said, 'It’s okay. This is your first time in this suit. So it should feel very mechanical and maybe not very natural.' Now, this is 10 years after that. So he's had a lot of time to acclimate. But again, it's a full-on challenge, just trying to get to set in that suit."
