James Gunn Doesn’t Like How Star-Lord Was Depicted In Avengers: Infinity War: “They Did Some Things That I Wouldn’t Have Wanted”
It’s been five years since the release of Avengers: Infinity War, and if you still wrap your head around certain things Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, aka Peter Quill, did in that Marvel movie, you aren’t the only one.
James Gunn, the writer-director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies — including the third and latest instalment (out May 4) — and last year’s Disney+ holiday special, has issues as well.
Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Gunn, who’s also the co-CEO and chairman of DC Studios, Marvel’s rival, shared his misgivings about Star-Lord's portrayal in Infinity War, which was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.
“They did some things that I wouldn’t have wanted,” Gunn said.
By “some things”, he was referring to the critical moment where Star-Lord lost his cool after learning what Thanos (Josh Brolin) did to Gamora (Zoe Saldaña). In doing so, he messed up the plan to stop Thanos from wiping out half of existence with his Infinity Gauntlet.
Gunn also said Star-Lord won’t hesitate to kill Gamora at her request, to prevent Thanos from prying the whereabouts of the Soul Stone from her.
The Guardians actors, too, had some reservations about how their characters were portrayed under the Russos’ watch.
Per THR, Gunn revealed that Pratt and Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis, contacted him from the Avengers set “to make sure the direction was all right”.
Klementieff said, “I was being given directions, and I was like, ‘I think I’m going to call James.’”
Besides Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Guardians also appeared in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love & Thunder.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has its Los Angeles premiere on Thursday (Apr 27) and those who caught the screening called it “the best Marvel movie in years”, “surprisingly emotional” and “full of heart”. Others thought it was “strangely uneven and anticlimactic”
8days.sg has also seen the movie on Friday and thought it’s action-packed, funny, sad, massive, messy, and some parts might actually appeal to David Cronenberg fans. But that’s us.
