They're heading to YMCA: Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot,, Ray Fisher, Ezra Miller, and Jason Momoa as members of the Justice League.

Has it really been two years since the release of Justice League? (It opened in Singapore on Nov 16, a day before its US bow.) Ever since, fans have been clamouring for Warner Bros to release the version of that movie as director Zack Snyder envisioned.

It looks like Batman and Wonder Woman, or rather the actors who play them, too, want to see that extended cut. Over the weekend, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot joined the fan culture movement on Twitter by using the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.”,

The “Snyder Cut” refers to the original edit Snyder was working on before he stepped away from the project during post-production, following his 20-year-old daughter Autumn’s suicide. The Avengers director Joss Whedon was brought in to complete the job.

That version of Justice League, which still credited Snyder as director, wowed neither fans nor critics (it scored 40% on Rotten Tomatoes), and earned US$657.9 million (S$895 mi) globally. It’s a lot of money for us mere mortals but by Hollywood tentpole standards, a tad underwhelming.

Wait, does this “Snyder Cut” even exist in the first place? Jason Momoa claimed he’d seen it. Filmmaker Kevin Smith has said that he has “spoken to enough people at various levels in that production [that] there is a Snyder cut.”

The Clerks director added, “That’s not a mythical beast. It exists. Now, it’s not a finished movie by any stretch of the imagination.” Even Snyder, who's currently working on the Netflix zombie picture, Army of the Dead, wants to finish what he started by tweeting...

Clearly, there is a demand for the “Snyder cut”, but will the powers that be ever release it? According to Hollywood Reporter, “no announcement of a release of any such cut is imminent.”

My hunch? It’s going to be out at some point. The studio is probably saving it for its upcoming HBO Max streaming platform. Just like how Disney released extra deleted Avengers: Endgame footage, not found on the Blu Ray and digital releases, on Disney+.

(Meanwhile, Joanne Peh should mark the first anniversary of Last Madame by starting a movement called #ReleaseTheLongerLastMadame. Can you see it?)

In other DC movies news, Joker became the first R-rated movie to gross US$1 billion worldwide. In Singapore, the Joaquin Phoenix-starring origin story of Batman’s greatest nemesis is the highest-grossing NC16 movie; as of Nov 17, it’s made more than S$6.4 million.

DC has two movies slated for next year: the Margot Robbie-led Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on Feb 6, and Gadot will back with her Lasso of Truth in Wonder Woman 2020, premiering June 4.

Joker (NC16) is still showing in cinemas.
