Why Furious Is More About Why Than Whodunit, According To Star Emmy Rossum And Creator Elizabeth Meriwether

2026 is shaping up to be the year of the Furious.

It’s been an unexpectedly busy year for projects called Furious — and none of them contains ‘Fast &…’ in the title. (Then again, look at the state of the world: it’s hard not to be furious about something.)

First, there’s the Malaysian boxing movie The Furious, followed by the China-US action spectacle of the same name. Now comes Furious — sans the definite article — and it’s a completely different animal: a simmering eight-part psychological thriller that’s far more interested in whydunit than whodunit.

Furious, which had its three-episode premiere on Disney+ last week, stars Emmy Rossum (Shameless) as FBI agent Alice Black, who’s assigned to a serial killer case. But as she digs deeper, the hunter realises she has more in common with her prey (Lola Petticrew) than meets the eye.

In an interview with 8days.sg, star and executive producer Emmy Rossum reveals how she trained with current and former FBI agents to prepare for her role, and why carrying a firearm became the key to understanding her character's mindset.

In another chat, creator Elizabeth Meriwether opens up about making the leap from comedy (New Girl) to her first straight crime thriller, the classic films and TV shows that informed Furious’s DNA — including The Silence of the Lambs, Mindhunter, Blood Simple and Laura — and why she believes the show's biggest mystery lies not in its murders, but in its two central women.

And because neither of us could resist, both interviews end with a fun Silence of the Lambs question. We asked Rossum and Meriwether whether Alice Black would call Clarice Starling or Dana Scully (of The X-Files) for help solving a case. Both knew exactly whose team Alice would be on.
